Identify policies and programs based on Shaw and McKay’s theories, which if implemented, could ultimately reduce crime. Be sure to relate your suggestions to the appropriate elements suggested by the theory.

This paper has two parts. First summarize the theories of Shaw and McKay regarding social disorganization. Next, recommend to the mayor ways to address disorganizing factors that will hopefully result to an increase in community organization and a reduction in crime. Essay Instructions: Research Paper, on Social Disorganization Theory
A major component of this class is a 2250-word term APA style and formatted research paper. No more than 25% of the written assignment in this course may be attributed to referenced sources. Your paper must be 75% original thought. Again, your cited work and quotations must not exceed 25%.
You must use and cite a minimum of five sources with no more than two being web sources.
Turnitin.com reports provide the instructor with the word count and the percentage of wording attributable to other sources. Papers may not be submitted from previous courses or classes to fulfill this requirement and will be referred for a potential Academic Code Violation. This assignment is due in Module 7 no later than 11:59 PM EST/EDT via the course Dropbox. (The Dropbox baskets are linked to Turnitin.)

Essay Instructions: The method of prevention is the ARISE Gang Prevention Program. If this can be related to other prevention methods, you may do so but the main focus should be on ARISE. The theoretical causes of the program should focus on Social Disorganization theory in Criminology. All other information can be obtained from the e-mail that I am going to send.

Essay Instructions: The purpose of the paper is to assess how well you are able to integrate your knowledge of the essays in "The City" with the four neighborhoods described in "There Goes the Neighborhood" (TGTN). Try to develop an analysis of how and why the features of the area chosen produce or lead to crime and or disorder (please define these). Below are topics that you must cover. Write the paper as an essay of 5-7 pages not as a numbered list. Please cite the text e.g. author and page, when you cite facts or use quotes. This is a reference-based research paper. You are encouraged to read the supplementary material e.g. Carr’s paper on Beltway; Sampson and Wilson on social disorganization and crime, Mary Pattillo’s article on “gangs” in Groveland.
2. Pick two of the four areas- locations or “neighborhoods”- described (Beltway, Dover, Archer, Groveland) and summarize their main features: income, location, population, race/ethnic composition in a paragraph or two. This may mean sorting through or outlining the chapters for the relevant facts as they are written in a journalistic fashion and do not follow a strict format. Refer to lectures on these chapters.
3. Discuss the salient factors in the location that lead to stability and the salient factors that produce change or instability. In this regard the essays of Park, McKenzie and Burgess in The City will be valuable. Look at the maps provided.
4. What are the primary threats that the residents perceive or identify according the authors of TGTN? How are these threats related to ideas such as invasion, succession, or the cycle of conflict, competition, accommodation and assimilation? Where do you locate the two neighborhoods you have chosen in relationship to these processes?
5. How does the social organization (patterns of age, ethnicity, class, or religion that make up the community) of the locations you have chosen shape or affect the crime and disorder that are of concern there? Provide examples e.g. “gangs,” “graffiti,” “crime.”? Is crime always a “disorganizing” factor? (see the Venkatesh and Pattillo articles on this).
6. What “belief system” is predominant in the areas you’ve chosen? Is this a systematic and coherent set of ideas, or more a set of worries and fears associated with change? Discuss why certain groups or categories of people, immigrants, Hispanics, African-Americans are seen as threats. Are white people seen as threats in the location you have chosen?
Suggestions: This is not intended as a description. 1. Perhaps a table showing the two neighborhoods you are comparing would clarify your points. 2. Show you have learned something from this class-lectures, readings, class discussion. 3. In general, the more you can develop an argument, a narrative, connecting your thoughts, and cite sources, the more persuasive your paper will be. 4. A summary will help clarify your argument.
