Essay Instructions: Part I: Literature Review

The purpose of a literature review is to provide an overview of significant literature published on a topic. Use at least five sources. Make sure to use scholarly sources such as research articles.

The review should be three to four, double-spaced pages.

Your literature review should contain the following elements:

An overview of the subject, issue or theory under consideration, along with the objectives of the literature review.

Division of works under review into categories (e.g. those in support of a particular position, those against, and those offering alternative theses).

Explanation of how each work is similar to and how it varies from the others.

Conclusions as to which pieces are best considered in their argument, are most convincing of their opinions, and make the greatest contribution to the understanding and development of their area of research.

Part II: Media Project

View a movie or TV program or read an article or book that depicts detailed, substantial instances of same kind of deviance discussed in your literature review. (Please do not select a general kind of article or book because you need to have specific occurrences of violence to analyze.) The content provides data for your assignment in the form of concrete events and experiences: Analyze how the depiction or data can be understood within the frameworks of the theories and research of our text and your literature review sources. First, briefly summarize the depiction of deviant behavior and then select key aspects to analyze. Optional: You may also use some of the introductory material in the appropriate sessions. Topics for this paper may deal with any deviant acts that are related to our course content.

Write a four to five page, single-spaced summary and analysis of the depiction of deviance in relation to themes from this course. At least three brief direct quotations from appropriate sections of the text with APA citations in the body of the paper are required. Additionally, use materials from your literature review to interpret the data.

Note on APA format:When you present your three direct quotations, please quote each precisely using quotation marks and then cite the author’s name, the publication date and page number in parentheses followed by a period. For example: “This is a quotation” (Author, date, p. xx).

The reference to the text at the end of the paper is formatted as follows: Author, First initial, Second Initial. (Date). Title of work. Location: Publisher. That is, please follow the APA style guidelines for citations and references.

Please keep the format of the paper simple and do not include any extra spaces (no title page) or blank areas. Insert appropriate topical headings for each section. Introduce your paper by presenting an issue or process that is relevant to this course. Explain the deviant behavior depicted using the theories of social deviance, the ideas presented in the course, and your literature review.

Use a 12 point Times New Roman font with 1" margins and make certain that your printout is easily readable. Single space with a blank line between paragraphs. Please do not refer to yourself in the first person. Remain in the past tense throughout the paper.

Title: Inertia and Crime

Total Pages: 1 Words: 354 Works Cited: 3 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: You are a research criminologist appearing before the Board of Supervisors. You are asked to respond to another presenter's quotation:

"We readily accept and tolerate ideas, which lead to inventions, better productivity, and increased production and efficiencies of life. But, we impulsively reject fact, knowledge, and ideas, which threaten our beliefs about crime. So, we remain ignorant of factual foundations and sound scientific research in sociobehavioral science. Thereby, we cling to the old, "tried," and untested belief structures implanted by the culture and its institutions. Our beliefs become the saboteur of "newness," of thoughtful change and public policy based in empirical research, societal entropy about crime, and social deviance."

NOTE: Think about labeling theory when you complete this paper. Can the lack of popularity of labeling and some other theories be explained by inertia? (answer and provide why or why not)

Remember this is a class about crime and policies and theories related to crime and criminals. What does the quote infer about these policies and theories? (Answer and give supporting reasons).
Present reasons supporting their stand

The aim of this assignment is to encourage you to explain and understand individual and societal resistance to policy and social change as it relates to crime. You should explain such resistance in terms of both psychological and sociological factors in the etiology of crime and social deviance
