Essay Instructions: Essay on Deviance
Instructions

The public generally interprets deviance as the actions of individuals. Sociologists stress the social context in which it occurs. Deviance may be the positive adaptation to a bad situation as we read with the Andes plane crash survivors or the adaptation of an inner-city teenager to desperate social-economic conditions and gang membership. What behavior is considered deviant or normal is dependent on our social context. Some deviant behavior is even encouraged by certain groups who apply pressure on new members to conform.

Read this study on the scope of College Binge Drinking across America. It provides strong evidence to show how the Social Context greatly influences individual behavior. Would these 4 year college students binge drink if they lived at home with their parents and went to a community college? Are there any groups in America who encourage and benefit from this deviant behavior?
