Title: Stumbing On Happiness book analysis paper

Total Pages: 7 Words: 2361 Sources: -6 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: These things should be discussed in the following order when writing your final paper:
1) Author’s or authors’ main argument in book (2 points):
Describe the author’s main argument or main point of the book. This is going to be your introduction paragraph that sets up your paper. Please note that you will need to have read the entire book before determining the author’s main argument. Put the author’s argument in your own words. Generally, an author’s argument can be written in a single paragraph.
2) Identify 5 different key themes/concepts using examples from the book (10 points):
Each example should be taken from a different chapter in the book. Make sure you identify 5 different key themes/concepts. In other words you should not discuss the same theme more than once, even if it occurs in multiple chapters. Please discuss a total of 5 themes/concepts in social cognition using 5 different chapters in the book (one theme/concept from each of the 5 chapters that you choose).

For each example please do the following 3 steps:
1. Identify one concept we have covered in class that the chapter illustrates. Define and explain the concept according to what we learned in class.
2. Provide a brief summary of the example, section of the chapter, or if the entire chapter is relevant summarize the chapter. For example, the author(s) could have described a fictional story, an experiment, or a series of experiments that illustrate the concepts you have chosen. It is important that you reference the author, chapter, and page number.
3. Explain why you think the example is a good illustration of the concept. Thinking about how the example helped you better learn or understand the concept would be a good thing to include in this section.

3) Discussion Questions and answers (1.5 points):
Write 1 thought-provoking and meaningful discussion question based on the book you have read and answer it. Do not ask a question that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”. The question should be thought provoking enough so that there is not a simple/easy answer. Therefore, your answer should be a “possible” answer in which future research might need to be conducted in order to confirm.

4) Real-World Connections (3 points):
Choose one of the 5 themes/concepts that you have identified and provide a real-world example of the concept. Real-world examples should be drawn from the media. Specifically, you may use examples from the news (print, internet or television), advertisements, song lyrics, TV shows/movies, books, magazines or comics. These examples should NOT be personal examples. They should not be things that happened to you or someone you know. Cite outside sources and attach a copy of the real-world connection(s) whenever possible. For example, if you find a song that illustrates a concept, attach a copy of the lyrics. If you think of a movie that illustrates the concept please cite the title of the movie and year. Make sure to explicitly state and explain how the theme/concept relates to your real-world connection.

Paper Checklist:
-Referencing: Authors should be referenced with their last name. For example, “According to Gilbert (2005)..." Please also be sure to reference page numbers if you are describing a particular example from the book. If you are referencing information that was taken from a lecture please reference the lecture title (e.g. lecture on heuristics, lecture on stereotypes and prejudice).
-Avoid writing that contains filler sentences. You should demonstrate that you have thought deeply about each of the sections above yet write your answers in a concise manner. Lengthy answers are not always better, especially if the answer contains filler sentences that do not add anything meaningful.
-Make sure you address each of the questions and each of the sub-components.
-Use the proper template that I am going to send you.
