Essay Instructions: Smoke Signals Paper

The film Smoke Signals (Written by Sherman Alexi and Directed by Chris Eyre) has attracted attention as the first full-length feature film written, directed, and performed by American Indians. The film is set on the Coeur d'Alene reservation in Idaho. Victor Joseph's father has just died in Phoenix, Arizona and the son is asked to collect his ashes and pick-up truck.

Smoke Signals is actually about resolving the conflicts between two polar opposite young American Indian men. But, it is also about much more. The assignment is to consider all of the elements of this story, and write two pages about what you think this film is trying to say to us. Take a position and then use events cited from the film or ideas from the readings to support your conclusion.

Also, questions to address: First, whether or not this film had to be made in an American Indian milieu? Could it have been about anyone? Would the message have been as affective? Also, should American Indians be the only people allowed to tell the story of other Native Americans, or can anyone tell their story (Indian or non)?

The essay should only cite supporting evidence for the argument that was found in the film Smoke Signals and in the Book:

The American Indian: Prehistory to the Present
Written by Arrell Morgan Gibson

I trust the experts at A+ College Essays will be able to access a copy of that book. Finally, the Paper needs to be 2 Pages, Double Spaced, 1" Margins, Times New Roman Font, and MLA Formatted with a bibliography page.

Essay Instructions: Smoke Signals Assignment

Based on a couple of stories (from The lane Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven) by Sherman Alexie, Smoke Signals is a first feature made by a Native American crew and creative team. The film concerns two young Idaho Indian men with radically different memories of their past.

Victor and Tomas are Indian members of the Coeur d’Alene, a Northwest Native American Indian tribe located on a reservation in Idaho. Life is very poor, and to a great degree, the people there depend on government welfare. Alcoholism is rampant, and families break apart easily, this situation is based historically on how the government originally dealt with the Indians. Most Indians as portrayed n the film do not thick like us; the have different beliefs and ideas on how to live, and their ways of humor are different. Yet, Victor and Thomas are, in many ways, just like young people everywhere, with the same issues and problem.

Do some background research about Native American life in the US so you can understand the issues that Victor, Thomas, Suzy Song, Arnold Joseph, Arlene Joseph and Grandma Builds-the fire must failures, and successes.

Paragraph 2

All of us have memories of childhood, some painful, some heartwarming. Also, most of us remember sharply the events and people who shaped us. Write about the characters in the film and then write about yourselves in the same manner. Go into your past and examine whether the experiences and memories shown by Victor and Thomas are stories you can identify with or not. This time compare and contrast yourselves with these tow young fictional men. But, bear in mind, that they are American Indians, not your usual next door neighbor here in Texas. Use some of the information you gathered in your research, but not a lot, and fit it to your theme. Your focus is on yourselves and these two, and with the others that make up their story. Try to be understanding and expand yourselves by seeing them as both young people, but also as Indians, also. 450 words
