Simone De Beauvoir Quote:

" The reason for this is that women lack concrete means for organizing themselves into a unit which can stand face to face with the corrective unit".

My view:

" i personally believe that women today have a concrete means and stand face to face with any corrective unit (MEN). By this I mean, women today are becoming educated, graduating from college, becoming small business owners, CEO's, CFO's, just like men. In this, women are not in the shadow of a men, but yet alone in there shadow becoming even more independent and establishing a firm foundation for themselves instead of depending on men.

Essay Instructions: The final paper (1500 words) for this course is due on December 3. Below are the paper requirements.
Choose two authors studied in this class and do the following:
1. Explain how these two authors converge and diverge in their understanding of 1-3 central existential concepts (eg. freedom, transcendence, being-for-others, Sartrean despair)
2. Explain what you consider to be persuasive and non-persuasive in each author's treatment of these concepts and why (include your own point of view only to the extent that you ground your point of view in argumentation/analysis)
3. Integrate both 1 and 2 above into a unified argument with an implicit question and the answer (thesis) to that question. For example, "The fundamental difference between Sartre and Fanon is their understanding of the impact of others on the self. Through an examination of the concepts of being-for-others and freedom in each author's writing, I will argue that whereas Sartre grants the individual autonomy, Fanon holds that the human being can only exist through the other."

Other important matters in terms of what I expect:
1. Citations from the texts we read in class, with the page number given, well-chosen, explained, and integrated into your argument.
2. Effective use of technical terms from our texts. Demonstrate your ability to identify different terms that designate the same or related concepts (eg, being-for-others/recognition; consciousness/transcendence)
3. Logical development, ie, not a circular essay. A good way to ensure that you have logical development is to skim through your entire essay reading ONLY the topic sentence of each paragraph. Topic sentences alone should tell your reader what your argument is and each should build upon the next in a forward motion. If your topic sentences do not provide a solid argument, rewrite them or consider if you need to add/cut an entire paragraph. Then read each paragraph alone. Every single sentence in that paragraph must directly address the topic sentence. If any sentence in a paragraph does not directly address that paragraph's topic sentence, do one of the following: 1. cut the sentence out; 2. re-write it so that the relevance to the topic sentence is clear; 3. move the sentence to a paragraph where it fits better. Think of your essay like this: The topic sentences tell your reader your argument; the other sentences in the paragraph provide evidence to prove the claim of the topic sentence.
4. A bibliography (even if you cite only from texts read in class).

I would like you two use only these two philosophers: Sartre and De Beauvoir. Also, it is very recommended that you frequently use the word " I ". Please also put the work cited after the 1500 words are completed. Thank you very much.

Essay Instructions: The topic for your second paper is to provide an analysis of the characters in Camus' "The Guest" using Simone de Beauvoir's terminology and ideas. What you must demonstrate is an understanding of Camus' characters and a sincere and persuasive attempt to engage with de Beauvoir's terms.
