Please put the names and SIDs of each member of the group on the front cover. Each group member should sign the cover. Keep a copy of your report.

Topic 1: Analysing the Business Cycles of a Country of your choice
No prior knowledge in econometrics or statistics is required for this topic. The group must choose a country of their choice providing sufficient data (for most
?
macroeconomic and financial variables with quarterly or monthly observations covering at least the last 10 years or more) are available for the country. The main objective of the report is to report on macroeconomic fluctuations, conditions and prospects in the chosen country. Make sure that you have quarterly or monthly data available for the country of your choice. You will have to obtain macroeconomic data for the country of your choice and will need to justify your choice of country!

The benchmark references for this report are the WEO reports: for example,
World Economic Outlook (WEO), Hopes, Realities, and Risks, April 2013
http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/weo/2013/01/index.htm
You will need to produce plots in a manner similar to those reported in the WEO for the country under examination. Wherever possible, you are encouraged to compare the macroeconomic performance of the chosen country against the US or OECD or the global economic condition.
The following variables must be analyzed:
(1) real GDP or industrial production index, as a measure of aggregate output
(2) price inflation, as a measure of the rate of change of the price level
(3) real private consumption (eg. private final consumption expenditure)
(4) real gross fixed investment (eg. gross fixed capital formation)
(5) inventory investment as a percentage of GDP.
(6) the level of employment or the unemployment rate
(7) productivity (you have to construct this using a definition); total factor
productivity or labour productivity (defined as output over labour input)
(8) a short-term interest rate with maturity less than one year (eg. T-bills, T-notes,
overnight cash, Federal funds)
(9) the growth in money supply (eg. Use M2 or M3)
(10) the nominal exchange rate (eg. US$/A$)
(11) the real exchange rate (you have to construct this using the definition, if not
available)
(12) the trade balance or current account as a percentage of GDP.
In addition, you are strongly encouraged to analyze the following data:
(13) the yield curve (you need to construct this as the difference between a long- term interest rate and a short-term interest rate with the same risk characteristics)
(14) the stock price index or stock returns (note that stock returns can be calculated using the stock price index)
(15) Commodity price index or individual commodity prices such as the prices of gold, base metals, etc.
(16) Consumer confidence and business confidence indices (e.g. Melbourne- Westpac Index)
(17) House price index (e.g. average of house prices in major capital cities in Australia)
(18) Government debt as a percentage of GDP.
(19) Any other indicator or variable, not listed above, of your choice (e.g.
productivity, unit labour cost etc)
?2
Plot the data in an appropriate manner as shown in the WEO (or some RBA reports), and provide economic explanations. You need to prove explanations or interpretations of all the figures you report.
There are faxes for this order.
