Essay Instructions: Short story "What I Saw from Where I Stood" by Marisa Silver
Compare to "A Sorrowful Woman" by Gail Godwin, and any others from syllabus you find relevant. "The Yellow Wallpaper" maybe.

Draft and write an essay of no less than 750 words which answers this question:

What does this contemporary short story contribute to the body of women''s literature and how?
Address the following:
- the effectiveness of literary techniques and elements in the story
- The development of theme and it''s connections to other ealier works of women''s literature ("A Srrowful Woman")
- the personal connections women of 2002 can make to the story
- any other aspect you wish to discuss in answer to the question
- how is story similar or different to others we have read? make connection to other women writers. ("A Sorrowful Woman")
- what''s original about this story? will this story be equal to those we have read? Some original things are: this is only story written from man''s point of view. written from what a woman writer thinks is man''s point of view.
- Some comparisons between these two stories are: in "Sorrowful Woman" husband "understands" but helps her slip into madness. In "What I Saw from Where I Stood" husband also understands, but pulls his wife back from going mad. In "Sorrowful Woman" wife changes bed rooms, in "What I Saw..." wife moves bed in to livingroom.
- Important points from "What I Saw..." rat in bedroom is symbolic of lost baby. WIfe moves bed into livingroom to get away from rat(baby). marriage bed is big and consumes livingroom. carjacking takes place in front of hospital where Dulcie went during miscarriage.

Must include quotes from both stories.

This module was a about critical thinking. I had group discussions and I had to re-read the short story the yellow wallpaper. I should explore ways of critically reading the story, or discuss the ways in which my reading of the story is now different.
