Essay Instructions: This is a COMPARE/CONTRAST ESSAY. The topic assigned is: Compare and contrast SOCIETIES and PHILOSOPHIES in Ursula K. LeGuin''s "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and in the SMALL TOWN in Shirley Jackson''s "The Lottery." These are the rules that the teacher has set: 1) Have a SPECIFIC Thesis 2)Do not organize essay by story''s chronology 2) Write only in the 3rd person 4)Analyze/interprete for an audience who knows the story (not just an explication) 5)You must INTEGRATE QUOTES from the story into the essay by this I mean weaving the quote as part of your own sentence. Keep in mind that when you do so, you need to use only part of the material you are quoting in order to create correct sentence form and correct verb or pronoun agreement. It is not a good idea to simply quote a passage and then follow it with a sentence telling what the passage means. Instead try to work the quote in along with your explanation 6)You also must INTEGRATE the 2 stories'' elements--do not present one story and its characteristics and then the other story.7) Use present tense. As far as how many quotes--as many as you can weave in. No footers. No parenthetical citations.
