Essay Instructions: These are discussion topics. Each response should be one page or less per topic.

Disc #1:
For this week's post, please choose 3 theories of sexual deviance and describe them. Be sure to include the population they target, major aspects or foundations, strengths, weaknesses, etc. In addition, which theory of sexual deviance so you think is the most complete and general theory to describe sex crimes? Why? Finally, create your own theory of sexual deviance (be sure to give it a name) and describe the sex crime/criminal it would target and the major tenants you would use to describe/predict/explain sexual deviance.

Disc #2:
For this week's post please discuss the 4 major family types that shaped modern views on sex and sexuality. Be sure to be specific about their views concerning sex, sexuality, women, children, societal and CJ responses. How do these views translate into modern society and how the criminal justice system reacts to sexual behavior? Is the US different from other parts of the world? What are your personal views on the family types and how things "used to be?"

Disc #3:
What are the different types of pedophiles? Be sure to discuss each one in depth and make sure to discuss what is unique about them and what makes them different from other types of pedophiles. What are the differences between male and female pedophiles? What makes female pedophiles so hard to discover? Discuss the social ramifications/expectations/general thoughts concerning female pedophiles (basically why many think they don't exist and why some victims don't come forward).

Disc #4:
For this week, please choose 3 dangerous sex crimes and define each. Be sure to give examples, typologies, and characteristics of the practitioner and victim. Also, explain why the sex crime is dangerous to the victim or practitioner. Finally, do you think that the crime (each of the 3) can or won't lead to more violent sexually based crimes? Why or why not? (This is a question of escalation--which is important to think about when discussing low-level sex crimes)!!!!

Disc #5:
For this week, discuss the different types of rapists. Be sure to include the gender of the offender and victim. What makes them unique from other types of rapists? What problems do they present to the criminal justice system in regards to detection and capture? What are the social perceptions associated with rapists (i.e. in it for the sex?) and how are these perceptions different from sex crime research and what you have learned thus far? Which of the different types of rapists do you think is the most "dangerous?" Why?

Disc #6:
Describe the different types of treatment available to sex offenders. Be sure to include the methods and the type of sex offender. Also, discuss any obstacles associated with sex offender treatment. Do you think current legislation is a method of treatment? Is it effective? Finally, do you think that sex offenders can be treated? If not, why? If so, which kind? What would be your solution to the sex offender problem?

Consider the various social problems that exist because of crime. Crime intersects with many variables on several levels. Stop and Frisk as it relates to race and social class

Privatization of prisons and how it impacts impoverished communities

There are almost an infinite amount of topics you can choose from, but make sure you choose something specific because this is only a 4-5 page paper.

You will be expected to research at least 2 peer-reviewed journal articles and include them in your paper as a reference. You can also include the FBI Crime Statistics database found at: http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/crimestats

Your paper should be organized like this and you should use the subheadings provided:

1. Introduction (1/2 page-3/4 page): Introduce your topic. Tell the reader why this topic is relevant in our society. Explain why you think this is a social problem in our society. Here you can include some background info from our textbook, statistics from the FBI website and any recent news article that will help show the reader that your topic is relevant, timely, and important. For example, maybe the New York Times just published a story on Stop and Frisk. This relates to race, class and crime.

2. Summary (1-2 pages): Provide an overview of the information from the journal articles and from the concepts described in the book. I?m looking for you to summarize what people are saying about this topic.

3. Analysis (1-2 pages): Explain how this issue impacts our society on the macro level. Consider the following questions: How does this issue affect the way our society functions? Is the issue dysfunctional? If so, how? What kinds of conflicts arise from this issue? Between which groups? Which groups gain power from this issue? Which groups are exploited?

Also, explain how this issue impacts people on the micro level. How does the issue affect people?s everyday living? What kinds of personal problems/issues can arise from people involved in these issues?

Reflect back on the summary to support your analysis.

4. Conclusion (1/2 page-3/4 page): Conclude your essay and leave the reader with a suggestion on how your particular topic/issue can be addressed in our society. What can be done to alleviate this issue? Be creative in your suggestions.
