I was not able to volunteer at the Houston or NYC Food Bank, so I?m writing about my other experiences for Service Learning, Volunteering and Community.

My Experience:
I have volunteered to assist my colleagues whom are from the nation of Haiti. We have collected toiletries from hotels stays ( I?m a flight Attendant all F/A?s contribute), school supplies, clothing as well as food. I have also had the honor of flying to Haiti to delivery this donations. On one occasion, I had the opportunity to visit an orphanage and a home that housed mothers and their children. This was the saddest most emotional part of the trip, seeing the mothers of these precious babies. As I interacted with the families and held this one particular baby, so cute. The mother said, ?You can have him, you can keep him.? It brought tears to my eyes. All mothers want a better life for their children.

Definitions:

Service Learning
Service-learning involves students in community service activities and applies the experience to personal and academic development. Service-learning course objectives are linked to real community needs that are designed in cooperation with community partners and service recipients.
Service-learning engages students in a three-part process: classroom preparation through explanation and analysis of theories and ideas; service activity that emerges from and informs classroom context; and structured reflection tying service experience back to specific learning goals.

Volunteering
Any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives. Central to this definition is the fact that volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual. This can include formal activity undertaken through public, private and voluntary organizations as well as informal community participation.

A. Provide a 2 ? 3 page (at least 1000 ? 1200 words) summary of your service learning field experience with the Houston Food Bank (HFB). Be sure to include at least the following elements:

Essay Instructions: The purpose of the paper is to reflect on the experience of observing people in a psychiatric hospital.

The paper should answer the following questions and adhere to the following outline format:

A Subjective component: the experimental dimensions of service learning.
1. what were your expectations or feelings gearing the experience before you went to the site?
2 what were your expectations of the site or organization before you went to the site (consider the environment and your interactions with those you would work and those you would serve)?
3. what were your feelings while there?
4. what service did you perform? whom did you serve? were you working with other volunteers? expand on you duties.
5. what were your observations of the site and the organization after your visit?
6. What were your observations of the service learning experience after your visit(how did things go for you, how did the day end up, how did you feel after)

B, Objective component: the cognitive dimension of service learning.

1. Discuss how one of the following concepts was a part of your service learning experience:
Research issues(correlations, experiments, etc.); biological or physiological perspectives (including sensation and perception); learning, memory and intelligence; cognitive development; psychosocial development; motivation; health and stress; social psychology; or psychology disorders.

C. Discuss the concept of cultural diversity and how this service learning experience enhanced or facilitated your understanding of diversity in our society. You can discuss several types of diversity, such as: ethnicity, economics, race, lifestyle, choies, sex, gender, mental health, physical appearance, personality, spirituality, etc.

Discuss how the people you were serving were doing their best to adjust to any adversity that the might face? what are your reactions to the difficulties the are dealing with and how they are coping with them? how are you similar to or different to those you served?

If you served an environmental cause discuss the culture of the group/agency. What are their core beliefs, and how might those be different from other people's beliefs? what do they know that others might not? you can also include the issue of diversity in how this volunteer cause serves people from different cultures (and perhaps they are more needed to sere or protect the interest of specific people, i.e.. lower socioeconomic status, poorer neighborhoods, etc.

Essay Instructions: This is a very easy but long experience paper because involves a Service Learning Project.

I will submit 15 resources to you: Requirements, introduction, template, my notes, 4 slides power points, 6 project photo pictures, and 1 cover page of my text book.
