Essay Instructions: Here are the instructions that were given to me. This is an essay examination rather than a term paper, so bear in mind that I will be looking for logic, insight, originality and coherence. Content, grammar, mechanics and appearance will also factor into the grade. Whatever sources you use you should annotate with the appropriate citation. Form of citation does not matter, as long as it is logical and consistent. It should also be typed and double spaced.

The question asked is -
Despite the Puritan founding, the constitution formulated at Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 provides for a secular democratic republic instead of a theocracy. Why do you think this is? Do you agree it should be?

I believe that the United States constitution was written during the age of enlightenment when science was replacing religion as the dominant force in peoples' lives. This was an age where people were no longer blindly following religious leaders. I think that is why Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers believed in separation of church and state. I think the Church of England being controlled by the king was another factor as to why the founding fathers did not want a theocracy. They wanted nothing to do with Great Britain and had no desire to follow in their foot steps. Not to mention that the puritans influence had waned by the time of the American Revolution. And I strongly agree that there should be a separation of church and state. I do not agree with Iran's theocratic government.

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1722 Works Cited: 5 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: I need a paper on Thomas Jefferson and his ideas on the separation of church and state crystalized in his 1801 letter to Danbury Baptists. Be sure to also present the debate concerning the "wall of separation between church and state". (my professor noted on page: What does the fact that there is a fluid debate on this for over 200 years say about American Religious History?) Must also use the Danbury letter as an original source. Give some background on his own religious views, Danbury Baptists, and the idea of separation of church and state. THANK YOU!!
