MIXED COMPANY

Her dog is J. D., a basenji--
like Anubis, a dog of ashes.
His ears stand up,
jackalesque behind the cabin door.
he waits for hours for my mom and dad
to come back from fishing.
The boat so far from shore, the water cold.
I imagine he knew the moment,
as she passed over without him.
Howled in ancient dog,
I sit at the helm,
I correct the scales,
tell the tiller to take her to Elysium.

Now his ears prick up watching my father
go in the Pressbox for a beer.
He waits a moment,
then begins his destruction.
She always took him along,
so my dad does, and he gets
a torn up bench seat in his pickup,
scratches on the inside of the doors.

At night the dog lays an offering
just where he knows my father steps,
in the shadowed-in passageway.
Or he tears up the carpet, or used kleenexes
and new towels. The dog is prescient--
he strews garbage on his side of the bed.

After months of this,
Dad tells me he didn’t used to believe
her amateur psychiatry, but yesterday,
when the veterinarian diagnosed J. D.
with “separation anxiety,”
he said he believes this is true.

My dad refuses counseling,
but is diagnosed vicariously.
I admire the dog’s animal honesty,
his clarity with symbols.
