Essay Instructions: This essay should be written in the form of a problem/solution essay on selfishness. It will have five body paragraphs. The first part of the essay queston is the "problem" part of the essay. After providing the introduction, the first two(2) paragraphs of the essay should focus on proving the answer to this question of "Which aspect of human nature is most to blame when selfishness takes over?" The "solution" part will be the answer to this question of "which aspect of human nature is most needed to stop selfishness once it takes over?" One(1) paragraph of the essay will focus on proving the answer to the "solution" question. After this paragraph, it should be wrapped up with a conclusion.

This essay will be required to be written in a two-part thesis, one that explains what the entire essay will focus on, such as " When selfishness takes over, the aspect of human nature that is most to blame is........, and the aspect of human nature most needed to stop it is........"

Essay Instructions: This paper has 2 seperate parts. Each part should take about 1 1/2 pages. Each part has a scenario with questions to answer. Criteria to be met for each part is included.

Nearly everyone knows that the Japanese save more money than Americans do, and that they are more community minded as well. How do the two nations compare when it comes to bequest motives and bequest divisions?

Charles Yuji Horioka, in a National Bureau of Economic Research working paper entitled “Are the Japanese Selfish, Altruistic, or Dynastic?” explored the attitudes and actions of parents in both nations as to the money and property they left their children. He identified three classes of bequests:

· The selfish. Selfish parents either leave money to their children in return for receiving care in their old age, or they attempt to spend all their money before they die.

· The altruistic. The altruists leave money to their children no matter what, with the most altruistic leaving the most to their poorest child.

· The dynastic. Dynastic parents leave money to preserve a family business or a name. They usually bequest all or most of their fortune to one child.

He found that selfishness is well entrenched in both nations but more so in Japan. Depending on the years involved, 77 to 91 percent of Japanese said they were disinterested with amassing wealth for the purpose of passing it on to their children, while 57 percent of Americans surveyed felt the same way.

When it came to splitting the inheritance among their children, 84 percent of Americans but only 44 percent of Japanese would divide the money equally. Also, 29 percent of the Japanese but only 3 percent of the Americans would give more or all the money to the child or children that took care of them in their old age.

PART 2

The Bureau of Labor Statistics showed an astonishing 5 percent gain in productivity in 2001’s fourth quarter. Some argued that technology had again made the economy more productive than ever before. White-collar workers are more likely to argue that the gains have been made on their backs. The recession’s layoff survivors bitterly point to the various schemes management has employed to get them to work harder for less money.

· Longer hours. It is estimated that 20 percent of the workforce spends more than 49 hours a week on the job ??" mostly professional and white-collar workers.

· Reclassifying workers as managerial. Class action suits charging that firms are misclassifying jobs to skirt overtime pay are on the rise.

· Loading up on temporary workers. The ranks of temps grew 56 percent during the boom years ??" a just-in-time workforce that receives no severance pay and no benefits. The temps have been the fastest growing segment of employment in 2002.

· Making less do more. Firms are shrinking the workforce without reducing workloads. They are also forcing employees to work harder to increase sales.

· Shifting risk. Pay is increasingly tied to company performance. That saves money when profits disappear while spurring harder work.

This is all well and good for the present but what happens when the economy rebounds? The spectre of tight labor markets in the future coupled with the feeling of exploited workers with long memories, does not auger well for those firms who are seeking enhanced profits right now.

Essay Instructions: The research paper is about how the United States is becoming a very complacent country that is completely unaware of the social decay occurring from within. How apathy is embraced as if it was virtue by so many Americans (particularly the rich and those living in big cities) Few examples: The united states is losing the middle class as well as its "blue collar" jobs to cheaper workforces outside the country. The United States is becoming polarized with a rich minority who controls everything. How more and more Americans crave greed above all else. How big cities like New York are breeding grounds for social and moral decay. Where people only want easy answers, quick fixes and simple gratification (lust, casual sex, drugs, infatuation) No deep emotional connections, little to no kindness, extreme selfishness, everyone hides behind masks (fake nice), no one reveals their true selves because most are shallow, insecure, weak, and broken inside. Hardly anyone does anything without expecting something in return (gratitude, reward, money etc...) too many Americans are impulsive and want things now and feel entitled to whatever they desire. Americans often take the easy way like stealing to get what they want or use drugs so they do not have to deal with life.

I am hoping to compare the united states the other countries and empires where complacently and all of the other things associated with it led to their collapse (Russia 1917, France 1789, decline of the Roman and Ottoman empires.

For the record I despise Arrogance, Complacency, Ignorance, extreme selfishness, mindless greed, and fake caring.
I am a strong believer of balance and the middle path.

I was particularly inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche, Immanuel Kant's "what is enlightenment?" Buddha and Karl Marx and would like for their influence to appear in the paper.

I would like to close the paper by saying that I do not believe the united states is a lost cause nor a truly wicked either just that I would like to see real change. (Or something along those lines)
