In order to answer this question adequately, you will need to take all the following points into consideration:

(1). Begin your answer by stating your thesis. Your thesis will consist of your answer (there was a scientific revolution or there wasn?t) followed or prefaced by summary of your argument.

(2). Follow your thesis with s summary and discussion of points raised by Steven Shapin in ?The Scientific Revolution.? This discussion should characterize the historical problem of asserting that the scientific revolution was a distinctive historical period; it should also show why some scholars doubt the distinctiveness of the period. Be certain in your answer that you know where Shapin stands on this question.

(3). Choose one of the characteristics of the scientific revolution that you identify in (2) above, in particular a characteristic that Peter Dear discussion in ?Revolutionizing the Science?, and test your thesis against Dear?s discussion of the characteristic. (If you have identified a characteristic that Dear discussion in depth, you will need to go back and revise (2) to include one).

(4). Now take Kuhn?s ?The Copernican Revolution? into account. Does Kuhn show the position that the scientific revolution was a significant historical period? What evidence or arguments does Kuhn use to make his case? Here you will want to take care to distinguish between the Copernican revolution, the scientific revolution, and Kuhn?s notion of scientific revolution of scientific revolutions.

(5). Next, take ?Sidereus Nuncius? into account. Was Galileo a scientific revolutionary? Did he, by point a telescope at the heavens, contribute to a wave of revolutionary change in science?

(6). Penultimately, consider the materials on the scientific worldview, the rise of modernism, and the objections of antimodernists. Do these historical considerations support your thesis?

(7). Finally, conclude by restating your thesis and summarizing the positions you have taken in (2) to (5) above.
