Write a comparative review of films dealing with World War II and the Vietnam War.* In this review compare how two films deal with their respective subjects-one on World War Two, the other the Vietnam War.

Topic "Saving Private Ryan"

The review should address how this film represent the war experience, and how the film shape popular images of these two periods in American history.

Establish a thesis in the beginning of your review based on a comparison of the two films. Then use specific scenes, characters, plots and sub-plots, lighting and shadows, color, role of environment (if any), etc. to support your thesis.

Your paper should be 600-800 words in length with a title of your own creation. This is a single paper that reviews two films, using a comparative method.

Approach this assignment by asking the initial question: "what is similar and what is different about how these two films represent the war experience, and how does that shape popular understanding of these two wars in American history?" You may also want to ask who are the heroes (if any) in each film and how heroism is defined; how is the enemy portrayed? Another important question might be how each film addresses the issue of winning and losing, or victory and defeat--by what standards are these measured?

*Note: if you are in a location where it is not feasible to obtain and/or watch videos, you may substitute two books (one about World War Two and the other about the Vietnam War) for this assignment.

Essay Instructions: Need a one page essay on the movie "Saving Private Ryan" as it pertains to World War II.

Essay Instructions: This essay is for a final project. The topic is Steven Spielberg, more specifically two of his films-Schindler's List & Saving Private Ryan.
The introduction should give a brief history of Steven Spielberg. The body of the essay should give the history behind these two films. Also need to include detailed information about significant scenes from the movie-describe the scenes in detail-wht do you see on the screen, what happens within each shot, and how does that relate to what you see in the shot that preceded and the shot that follows this one.
Describe what the films mean to you. Discuss the most important characters, who they are and how they relate to each other.
The essay must portray a personal portrayal of the films.

"The Fog of War" by Errol Morris
"Hearts and Minds" by Peter Davis

Write a 5-page essay on the following question:
What "rule of war" or "lesson of war" have you derived from the above sources? What evidence do you see in the texts (poems, novels, films) which seems to support this rule? Do you see evidence of this rule in the world around you? Give at least ONE example.
You must 1) refer to at least THREE of the above seven sources, 2) use at least 2 direct quotes (totally at least SIX quotes) from each of the texts being referred (these need not be long quotes--they can be phrases or sentences. Please don't use other sources outside of the above seven), and 3) employ a minimum of SIX of the following structures (Six total--not six of each): noun phrase appositives, verbal phrases, adjective clauses, correlatives.

General guidelines:
1) Craft a clear and compelling thesis statement or controlling idea
2) Use the texts to support the thesis
3) Organize the ideas using clear, focused topics/main ideas and clear topic sentences
4) Explain and analyze the points you make in terms of the texts, reaching a reasonable level of depth
5) Explain ideas and analysis in clear, concise but descriptive and precise language
6) Be mostly free of sentence-level and mechanical errors

There are some possible topics we discussed in our class, but you don't have to use them:

-Sacrifice for political purposes is justified
-War is needed to ensure our freedom/safety
