Essay Instructions: Teachers Directions:
Write a critical essay which is based on original objects in the Art Institute of Chicago. These pieces must have been produced in Italy during the Renaissance, between 1300 and ca. 1580, spanning the Trecento to Late Mannerism. You ought to recognize the principal styles, themes, media/techniques, periods, and regional centers. Single out 3 works as the basis of your paper. Then seize on a specific topic and an organizing principle of your own choice. On each work do a stylistic analysis covering figure style, handling of space/perspective, and technique. For example, what are the special qualities of tempera on panel? Also consider the affective values;that is, the artist's use of pictorial elements to convey the emotional & psychological range of the subject matter. Also notice the contextual placement of the object into the artist's life and career--where it fits into Renaissance Art History overall.

The three works to focus on are as follows:
1)(In Gallery 208)-Sandro Botticelli, Italian. "Virgin and Child with Angels," 1475-85;Tempera on panel.

2)(In Gallery 209)-Jan Gossaert called Mabuse, Netherlandish 1478-1532. "Virgin and Child," 1520/25;oil on panel.

3)(In Gallery 211)-Antonio Allergi also called Correggio, Italian, 1494-1534. "Virgin and child with the Young St. John the Baptist, c.1515;oil on panel.

Specific topic of my choice to focus on:
Incorporate the theme of "Virgin and child" into the three specific works listed above. Discuss the theme of "virgin and Child" in the Italian Renaissance and explain how each of these artists absorbed the Virgin and Child theme into their works. Also compare and critique each of the of the works through the medium, technique, and style.

Sources:
Consult the books of F. Hartt and Christopher Lloyd (which is in the AIC catalogue). Try Art Grove Online and Wilson Art Abstracts too. Feel free to use other sources. Just cite every reference and use footnotes (or endnotes) and a proper bibliography. For websites, include the source/origin, and author. At least do three sources please!

*Please refrain from using any ostentatious words in the vocabulary unless they are cited from a source. Thank you!!!
