Essay Instructions: RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINE
A 6 page type-written paper that focuses on one work of art selected from the book called "Italian Renaissance Art" by Laurie Schneider, Adams, West New Press. The following is a guideline for organizing, researching, and writing this paper.
II. TWO IMAGES : YOU MUST INCLUDE PHOTOCOPIES OF YOUR RESEARCH TOPIC AND THE WORK OF ART YOU COMPARE IT WITH

III. INTRODUCTION :
A. Identify the work of art - In the first paragraph of your paper you should identify the work of art which you have researched. Proper identification must include:
- Title
- Artist
- Date
- Location
- Artists' Medium If you prefer, you can include this information in the Visual
- Dimensions Analysis Section of your paper
IV. DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT MATTER:
Describe the work of art in terms of CONTENT - What is the subject matter? (ie. Figurative/Portrait? Landscape/Nature? Religious? Abstract? etc.). Please refer to sources.
HISTORICAL/ART HISTORICAL INFORMATION:
Provide historical and/or art historical information relevant to the work of art chosen. You may also include information about the artist, when known. (LIBRARY RESEARCH REQUIRED). Although you may not find a lot of information about your particular piece, try to learn as much as you can about your work by researching other works of art like it; the time period it was made; the artist; the society/civilization which it represents, etc.
In this section, YOU MUST include at least one direct quote from a published book or periodical
and state whether or not you agree with the quote and why. THIS REQUIRES LIBRARY RESEARCH In your discussion of the literature pertaining to the work of art
and/or artist, you may also include:
-Information from the book titled "Italian Renaissance Art"
-Information from an encyclopedia
-Information from the internet
However, PLEASE NOTE that the sources listed above MAY NOT be used as a substitute for the required book or periodical. When quoting directly from a published text you must cite the published source, including the page number from which the quote was taken. You must also cite sources when you state information in your words that is based on your research. See Documentation.
VI. VISUAL ANALYSIS:
Discuss the work in terms of FORM - What does the work of art look like? How do the
artists' materials/techniques influence its appearance? Please refer to the book titled Italian Renaissance Art, by Laurie Schneider, Adams, West New Press, as well as other sources in completing your visual analysis. You should describe the work in terms of and at least TWO of the formal visual elements (ie., color, light, space, etc.)
VII. COMPARISON TO ANOTHER WORK OF ART :
Compare the work of art with a second work of art chosen from the book titled "Italian Renaissance Art" (as per stated above): or other source.
- Identify the second work of art as explained in SECTION III and describe the work
- What do the two works have in common? How do they differ? Remember to address issues related to both form and content.

DOCUMENTATION
Proper documentation of sources used in your paper is a critical part of any research paper. The documentation of sources in your paper should follow the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers which can be found at the Reference Desk in the Library. This format for documentation requires that you:
Briefly cite all sources within your paper in parentheses by including the author and page number
Alphabetically reference all sources in parentheses under "Works Cited".
PARENTHETICAL DOCUMENTATION
You must cite all sources that you use and/or quote from in your paper by including the last name of the author and the page number of the book/periodical in parentheses. Please follow this sample:
According to art historian Leon Smith, "One feels in this statue the ideal of kingly majesty" (Smith 735). Indeed the royalty of the figure is clearly displayed through his proud stature. This feeling is conveyed in many works produced during the Middle Kingdom, including those of the Pharoah Hatshepsut (Waters 5).
