Essay Instructions: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING!!: For the essay, you must choose one theme from the book ---M. Beard, J. North, & S. Price, Religions of Rome, volumes 1 and 2, 1998.....and expand on it, drawing on all readings (so from pages 1-363 on BNP vol1 and on BNP vol 2) and from additional reading from Hijjmans: S. Hijmans, Sol: the Sun in the Art and Religions of Rome, 2009; available online at:

http://dissertations.ub.rug.nl/faculties/arts/2009/s.e.hijmans/vol1/

Chapters 1-2 and 6-8. (YOU MUST USE BNP vol 1 and 2 TO WRITE THIS ESSAY BUT USE HIJJMANS CHAPTERS AS REFERENCE AND REFER TO IT AT WHEN WRITING THE PAPER ALONG WITH 2 OTHER SCHOLARLY BOOKS ETC...), but from these reading choose ONE theme and expand on it!!
How you expand on it is completely up to you. In addition,
you must cite at least two examples from BNP volume II, and two secondary sources (scholarly
articles or books) that were not assigned readings.
Possible approaches to the essay include:
“Scholarly”: why is your chosen “theme” important for the study of Roman Religion?
Comparative: how does this aspect of Roman religion compare to ...?
Personal: why did this theme in particular strike you?
Historical: how did views/theories with regards to this theme change over time?
Etc.
Brevity is again the key; the maximum number of words, including FOOTNOTES!!
