Essay Instructions: Literary Analysis Paper
You are to analyze and evaluate Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken."
1. Review the guidelines in the Assignment Checklist.
2. Read "The Road Not Taken" (Perrine's 725) again. Note: The word "wanted" (line 8) means "lacked."
3. Ask yourself the following questions (and keep notes to your answers for each one):
o Describe the literal scene and situation.
o What mood is the speaker in at the end of the poem? Why?
o What are the metaphorical (or symbolic) implications in the poem?
o Why does the title emphasize the road not taken?
o What are the rhythm patterns that Frost uses in the poem (include the scansion and technical methods: alliteration, assonance, and consonance)?
4. Write an essay which explains:
o The theme of the poem.
o The methods that Frost employs to communicate the theme.
o Note: The responses to the questions that you answered above should be included in your essay. The paper should include the following in this order: title page, thesis sentence and outline, and essay. The essay should be between 3-4 pages double-spaced with 1 inch margins. Font size is 12 point.
5. When you complete the essay, be sure to do the following:
1. Include a cover in front of the essay.
2. Retain a rough draft and a copy of your final essay until you receive your final grade.


The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,


And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
