Essay Instructions: This research essay is a critical analysis of the following critical artifact from Poetry, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" Study the artifact, read it several times. You are trying to understand everything you possibly can about this single piece of art/literature. You want to know it's surface meaning, symbolic meaning, metaphorical meaning, aesthetic meaning, cultural meaning, political meaning, and historical meaning. In other words, this is not a plot summary or a high school report, such as "what do I like or not like about this piece of art". You need to discover the value of this artifact. That means, why is this particular piece of art/literature still around? It has been accepted by experts in the particular field as well as the general public as exceptional. At root, this concept of being exceptional, being or encompassing the very essence of this art/literature, will be found in its aesthetic, philisophical, and psychological value. Now, how you can you relate your choice, Rime of the ancient mariner, to these three values, ie, aesthetic, philosophical, and psychological? You must cover all three of these in your research essay. You may end up dividing your essay into three parts or you may decide to blend the three into a single, smooth flowing essay. Either way is fine.
The format is the traditional MLA format, 7th edition. The essay needs to be 6-8 typed pages in length. You will need a minimum of 6 outside sources. These 6 secondary sources must be divided into 3 hard copy sources, e.g., journal articles, books, documentary films, lectures, or textbooks. The other 3 sources need to be online sources found at .org or .edu websites. Avoid .com sources. Also, do not use wikipedia.org. If you have less than 6 complete pages or less than the 3 and 3 required secondary sources, you will receive an "F" on the assignment.

Essay Instructions: Read the intro to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and the footnotes carefully, especially the one about the epigraph- (Norton Anthology of Literature II)-how there are more spirits in the universe than science and reason can know-but that is difficult to distinguish DAY FROM NIGHT, CERTAIN FROM UNCERTAIN. Read the first two LONG sections (not stanzas!) of the Rime, approximately 4 pages.
Now for the essay-this is not a formal essay and there does not need to be any type of bibliography. Just site what you use from the text. No more than 3 short citations should be used.
To start the essay write 3 meaningful questions that could possibly be answered by the text with some though, not yes or no answers. Then write the word hypothesis and state a reasonably specific hypothesis which is your first thoughtful answer to my question, try and make everything fit in that section, and if it doesn't meditate on the page about how the stuff that doesn't fit could alter, complicate, qualify your orginal hypothesis, then rewrite a more complex hypothesis at the end of your entry.
My Question to answer:
Assuming that the psychological-spiritual level is at least to this point grounded in actual literal experience with nature-given their "ice-olation," why would the crew intuitively compare the bird perching on their ship to a "Christian soul"? Why would someone want to kill it?
These questions must be answered in the essay.
