Essay Instructions: My research paper will be focusing on the supernatural aspects of the play Richard III. It will discuss different elements of the supernatural or superstitious believes depicted in the play such as dreams, curses and ghosts. I will also try to lead a comparison between the original play and Locraines movie and try to decipher if due to modernization and the new forward thinking if these aspects are given less importance. As I am discussing different elements I will use the different characters, which are used to show them in the play, for e.g. I will use Clarence and Buckingham?s in order to show the dreams and following deterioration of their characters. I will also use Queen Margaret and Anne for showing the importance of curses and how Shakespeare gives weak characters a hidden weapon.

Before I start writing the paper I want to see if there is enough analytical material on the topic I have chosen. I find it very interesting but I don?t know if there is enough to say about it or what exactly the direction of my argument will be. I was considering it to be either on the effect of these elements on the progression of the play or Richard. Or probably to relate the play and Locraines movie on their respective times and culture and the effect. However, I think this will make the essay focusing on too many topics.

Essay Instructions: The following 2 assignments are based on the Shakespeare plays Richard III and Macbeth.

For both essays I need you to craft a thesis and support it in a 2-page essay.

Essay Topic 1: Compare Richard?s soliloquy in 5.5.131-160, when he awakes from his nightmare before going into battle against Richmond, with Macbeth?s meditation after hearing of his wife?s death, in 5.5.18-27. Briefly consider the similarities and differences in Richard?s and Macbeth?s rise and fall. At what point do we realize that Richard III is losing his ability to manipulate the people around him? When does Macbeth begin to lose power? How does the appearance of supernatural beings in each play influence our impressions of each of these men?s characters? What lessons do each of these plays offer about kingship and how it should be performed?

Essay Topic 2: In Richard III, we witness Richard?s manipulation of Lady Anne to convince her to accept him as both king and husband. How does Richard achieve this feat? Why might Lady Anne acquiesce to his solicitations? Does Richard?s similar tactic work when he approached Queen Elizabeth and asks to marry her daughter?
