In light of the reflection questions, your own experience, and current developments in the field, write a three-page paper laying out your disaster response plan. You should include at least five citations of current literature in the field and use in-text citations in APA format with a page of references at the end. (Your page of references at the end should constitute the fourth page of your submission.)

Scenario
Terrorists have recruited five cells of two persons each. The individual cells have no knowledge of the existence of the other cells. The terrorist leadership has selected targets based on population density within a confined space. All five of the targets are either conventions, sporting events, or high draw concerts. Although the National Intelligence Agencies have reported a slight increase in the level of chatter among known terrorists, there has not been enough hard intelligence to raise the National Threat Level. The security planned for the convention is in line with the current threat level. The selection of the Episcopal Diocesan Conference being held in Montgomery as one of the targets, coincides with the height of the cold and flu season for your region of the U.S. The two terrorists arrive in your state on the evening before the convention starts via commercial airlines after having been routed through two foreign countries separate from their country of origin. The aerosolized substance is introduced into the convention center’s HVAC system at approximately 10:00 a.m. on the first morning of the conference. By the third morning of the convention, there is a noticeable thinning of persons in attendance. At approximately noon on the third day, the state regional health district receives a report from Baptist Medical Center South and other medical facilities in the city that their in-patient census is climbing substantially from what appears to be a higher than anticipated number of upper respiratory infection patients. The state regional health district then passes this information to the State Public Health Department.

The only condition that they have placed on their offer is that ?needy families become directly involved in helping themselves and each other, and nobody just gets a free handout.? The provincial nutritionist, a good friend of yours, has indicated her support and is willing to be involved in consultation and teaching.

Course Objectives: By finding and demonstrating that you can analyze and understand articles by anthropologists, you will meet the following course objective: Explain how culture influences health and healing practices.

Project 1:
Anthropologists must be able to find relevant literature on their topics of interest, summarize these references, and relate them to each other.

In this project, students will summarize cross-cultural research findings in anthropology journals on one health/illness-related issue of interest to the student and then describe how they contribute to a cross-cultural understanding of the topic, comparing and contrasting their findings as appropriate. For example, perhaps you or someone in your household has/had a cold; you would look for articles about colds or, more broadly, acute respiratory infections in different groups of people. Perhaps you or someone in your household is a vegetarian for health-related reasons; you would look for articles about vegetarianism, or more broadly, eating and health in cross-cultural perspective (that is, in different groups of people. This doesn’t just mean different ethnic groups! People in the same family with the same ethnic heritage may have many different culturally constructed ideas about eating and health. A list of anthropology journals is included in the Additional Information section of the Syllabus. A minimum of five (5) references from anthropological journals is required. You may include more than five references and you may use references from journals that are not on the list of anthropology journals, but at least five of your references must be written by anthropologists and published in at least one of the journals listed below. This is an anthropology course! It's not a sociology, psychology, or epidemiology course! References should be cited within the paper and at the end of the paper using APA or AAA style (See the FAQs conference.)

For Project 1, below is the list of journals for articles on your topic of interest that are from the UMUC library databases (e.g., Social Science Citation Index, Anthrosource, etc.). You must include at least five articles from these journals in Project 1. You may add articles from other, non-anthropology journals as well, but this is an anthropology course and one of the purposes of Project 1 is to introduce you to anthropological sources.
