ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS:
Your essays should be in MLA Style and approximately 2-3 pages (not including the Works Cited page). In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor?s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don't forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.

part 2:

for this portion of this research paper, i would like you to explore meaning or theme in the short story `cathedral`.

investigate literary criticism/analysis regarding the piece of literature and create a thesis centered arguement/position based upon your research that investigates a THEME within the story and how one or more of the othere elements(setting,characterization,symbolism, etc.) contribute to the development of that theme.(you may draw from an idea you worked with in a previous character analysis paper you made). the next following line, i will outline the specif instruction for the part 2 of this research paper.

instruction for part 2 of the paper:

introductory paragraph:
*open with interesting lead material
*name the work and the author(very briefly
since the 1st part is bibliograph of author)
*give a brief summary of the work and state
the theme to be analyze.
*indicate how the theme will be traced through
the work. example: through the thematic
significance of the title and subject matter,
through the setting, through a specific
character and their words and actions in the
work, through symbolism or imagery,
through a series of related incidents in the
plot, usually ordered chronologically or
through any other logical means.

BODY PARAGRAPH:

*In the first part of the body, dicuss the first aspect of the theme by beginning with a topic sentence which generalizes about the theme. the next few sentences, provide background information for the supporting quoatation which follows. the analysis should focus on how the theme is revealed and developed through the quotation. be sure to explore the ideas about life that the quotation illustrates. this pattern of generalization/introductory infromation for the quotation/the quotation/analysis should be used as much as possible in each paragraph to thoroughly illustrate the theme and its development.

*the second part of the body illustrates the next aspect of the theme as stated in the thesis. the topic sentences introduces the theme and the remainder of the paragraph is developed through introductory statements that lead into direct quoatations which are followed by in-depth analysis.

*discuss the remaining parts of the themes developement in the last part of the body paragraph. the topic sentence relate to the theme and the literary analysis pattern is used. the last paragraph, because of its important position, should be thoroughly developed.

CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH:

*discuss and explaine in detail the theme which was stated in the introductory paragraph. the topice sentence clearly restates the theme, and the rest of the paragraph summarized how the theme in revealed in the work and then explores the themes universal significance. show how the theme relates to everyones life because of the universal human condition.

that is just my thesis..i think the more effective way to elaborate the thesis is basically answer or explain my thesis using examples or incidents in the story or article..
but its totally up to you how you want to do it..
