Title: Rape Culture and Spring Breakers

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1660 Sources: 5 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: In the third progression, you will work towards a passionate, intelligent essay about a present day controversy. Your goal, in this essay, will be an intellectual essay that develops a compelling and complex idea about the larger meaning of a specific real world issue that we face, not a rigid opinion paper. Your essay will need both a specific (Spring Breakers (movie by Harmony Korine)) and a general topic (rape culture). (My chosen issue is the movie "Spring Breakers" and rape culture)
It’s crucial that your evidence be rooted in reputable sources. The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal are four of the most prestigious American news sources, and I encourage you to make use of their websites.
Write an essay in which you develop your own original point of view on a controversial issue. We are looking for much more than a mere description of the evidence, and much more than a declaration of a simple opinion or a consideration of the pros and cons of any given argument; through smart framing of evidence and probing reflection, your goal is to develop an engaged, thoughtful, intellectual ethos that has the power to seize the mind of an intelligent reader, regardless of his or her politics. Cite at least five sources of evidence in this essay. If you choose, this essay may take the form of a letter to a powerful figure whose ideas you would like to influence.

(We have already done some exercises regarding this essay. I will send in those as well as links for some articles I've found online)

Work on:

1) creating a vivid, un-boring, authoritative representation of the issue itself.

2) integrating an unexpected piece of evidence (a personal experience, a philosophical text, a scene from a film, a Youtube clip). It could be anything. You're trying to go beyond what's expected and obvious and conventional, to surprise your reader with the freshness of your approach.

3) developing a complex idea.

It should have an interesting title.
There are faxes for this order.
