Essay Instructions: The paper must be an in-depth critical understanding of one key issue concerning urban schooling. The texts used were D.B. Tyack (1974, "The one beswt system: A history of American urban education") and C.M. Payne (2010), " So much reform, so little change: The persistence of failure in urban schools"). The paper must tie in to their perspectives of urban education. My area of interest is how politician are dismantling and destroying public education for the sake of creating charter schools in urban areas particularly areas highly populated by African Americans and other urban minorities.
Some books suggested by the professor were; "The assault on public education" by William Watkins, "The mis-education of Negro" by Carter Woodson, "The white architects of black education" by William Watkins, and "What you should know about the war against America's public schools" by Gerald Bracey. One stipulation was that all claims made in the paper should be supported. The paper is to be a thorough analysis of the concerns related to my chosen issue (including both sides of the issue) and communicated by my position relative to it in a scholarly manner.
I am a teacher at a Detroit Public School and is watching how politicians have just dismantled the district and seeing the rise of a new urban district called EAA, which is the creation of charter schools. I am totally against charter schools and the inequalities that exist between urban and suburban public school districts.
