Impact of PTSD and Substance Abuse on African American females

Many patients, especially in the lower income brackets, are skeptical about the advantages of therapy and counseling (Gelso & Fretz, 2001). Therefore, it is imperative to convince them that counseling works and utilize techniques, theories and goals that explore an integrative approach to treatment. It is against this backdrop that this project will address the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and substance abuse on African American females.
Kendall- Tacket (2009) suggests people with PTSD use more health care services than those without PTSD; and that patients who experienced multiple childhood traumatic events had higher rates of chronic illness then their counterparts. Many of these consumers have experienced multiple stressors/traumas from childhood that continue into adulthood. These traumas have contributed to a mind-body connection, and must be addressed to assist them to move forward. True enough, it is how they have experienced the world that has led them to where there are today.
