Consult a textbook chapter or a review paper in order to describe the method briefly but clearly, and agin you will need to evaluate one empirical study (not an essay, a review, or a meta-nalysis) of its effectiveness.

Guidelines -
1. Choose a psychological (or medical) treatment or intervention for a psychological/psychiatric problem. You may choose eiher - some students have looked at amphetamines for attention deficit disorder or eletroconvulsive therapy for depression, and other have looked at hypnosis for obesity, behavior therapy for anorexia nervosa, "rapid eye movement desensitization" for post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.

2. Read a description of it in a standard compendium or textbook about psychotherapy. You may also use an abnormal psychology textbook, an 'Annual Review'-type publication, a review chapter, or any other balanced discussion. This should provide a description of the treatment and a critical discussion of its use and effects.

3. Find an empirical research paper ( not a chapter, review, or meta-analysis) in a recent psychology or psychiatry journal that studies the treatment compared with some control groups.

Importnat - Your paper should discuss the treatment method in light of the empirical study, including
a) A brief description of the treatment method (2 points).
b) A brief description of the theories or assumptions that underlie the treatment method (1 point).
c) A description of the treatment method as operational in the study: who are the research subjects, what is their problem, what kinds of treatment do they actually undergo? (2 points).
d) A discussion of how the treatment was evaluated in the study - instruments or other methods used, control groups, follow-up period, etc. Have the instruments used been evaluated for reliability and validity? (3 points)
e) What did the study show? - and this should include some numbers or "box scores." What do you think the study can teach us about the usefulness of the treatment, and what remains unresolved for you? (2 points).
