Title: Munchausen's Syndrome

Total Pages: 7 Words: 1941 Sources: 7 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Content of Paper:

You are expected to become an expert on theories that explain the DEVELOPMENT (*not* the treatment) of Munchausen's Syndrome. The emphasis is to be on current theory and research. The books or journal articles that you use should have been published in the last 15 years.

Make sure you have explained the development of the disorder using the DIATHESIS STRESS (VULNERABILITY - STRESS) MODEL.

In addition, do a diagram like the one on page 18 or 19 in Zuckerman's book (Zuckerman, M (1999). Vulnerability to Psychopathology. A Biosocial Model) and place it in the Appendix. Or, you may use an appropriate diagram from another source e.g. Hankin & Abela's Development of Psychopathology: A vulnerability - stress perspective. (cite your source).

Your Diathesis Stress (vulnerability - stress) model must address the following questions:
1. Is there a biological basis or genetic predisposition for this disorder? i.e. what does the research (e.g. twin studies) show? Is temperament a factor?
2. Are there any biological stressors (e.g. prenatal, perinatal, postnatal or later injuries) that play a role in the development of this disorder?
3. What role does the environment, especially the interpersonal environment, play in the development of this disorder? (Look for words like: environment, interpersonal, family, social learning, learning, reinforcement, modeling factors etc. in the literature).
4. What is the role of life stressors?
5. What are the vulnerability factors (i.e. what makes someone vulnerable to developing this disorder)? what are the resiliency factors? (i.e. what protects someone from developing this disorder)?

Explain why Psychodynamic Theory (other than the Diathesis Stress Model) best explains the development of this disorder. Give reasons for your opinion (not more than one page). Comment on how Attachment and Cognitive theories apply to the disorder (not more than a sentence or two per theory) or explain why they do not apply. Demonstrate that you clearly understand these theories and that you understand how they pertain to the disorder.

Present a case study of someone who clearly meets criteria for the disorder, that demonstrates how the disorder develops (a paragraph). Your case study should contain enough information to COMPLETE the DIATHESIS Stress model; i.e. you will have to have enough information to show: 1) that the person meets specific criteria for the diagnosis and 2) how the person developed the disorder - including all the predisposing factors. Don't just copy this out of a book - use your own words. Insert the case study in the appendix.

IMPORTANT: Demonstrate a capacity for Critical Thinking: comment on shortcomings or oversights in existing personality/behaviour disorder research and theory with respect to this disorder. In addition, say something CONTROVERSIAL or INTERESTING about the disorder and *justify* your comments.

Writing Style:
Your writing must be clear and concise. Your paper should be organized in a coherent manner and therefore easy to read and understand. There should be an appropriate level of formality in the use of language demonstrated in the journal articles and academic texts that you read. Grammatical conventions should be followed. Correct spelling and punctuation are required.

Must be written in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th Edition, 2nd printing, 2010.

Free Features requested: Title page, references/works cited in APA 6th edition, 2nd printing.

Length of Paper: At a minimum, must be 5 pages long, not including the references, appendix or DSM -IV-TR criteria (which can be listed in an appendix).
