Essay Instructions: Psalm 62 Exposition Paper

The exposition paper on Psalm 62. The purpose of an exposition paper is to provide a detailed explanation of the message and meaning of the psalm. This paper is a research paper and not a sermon or devotional study on the passage (though it should provide the foundation for a good expositional sermon).

1.The Exposition Paper must contain the following items:

Outline: The outline points should be complete sentences, should include the entire psalm, and should be taken down to a least two levels. The order of verses in the outline should follow the order in which they appear in the psalm. (1 page)

Introduction: The introduction should provide an overview of the message of the psalm and include any relevant details about setting or authorship (if this can be determined). The introduction should also identify the genre of the psalm and how the features of this genre are reflected in the psalm. (1 page)

Exposition of the Paper: This is the heart of the paper where you set forth the meaning of the psalm by explaining poetic features and figures of speech, the meaning of key words, interpretive issues, and the flow of the writer's thought. You should use the main points of the outline as headings for this portion of the paper. (7-8 pages)

Theological Message: The final section will provide a summary of the theological message of the psalm in the light of the overall message of the Bible as a whole. (1 page)

Bibliography: Please include a bibliography of sources used (use a minimum of 6 sources) Please use good reference/graduate-level sources for the research – avoid using devotional or popular-level commentaries.

2.The Exposition Paper must follow Turabian style/footnoting of sources and conform to the following
standards:
• 1” margins, top, bottom, and sides
• Double-spaced
• 12-point standard font (Times New Roman)
• Indent paragraphs 5 spaces or 0.6 inch (1 Tab)
• No extra-line feed between paragraphs
• Section headings in italics
• Page numbers must be included

3.The Exposition Paper must reflect spelling, style, and grammar that is appropriate for graduate-level research and writing.
