Prelude to Topics:
Now that we’ve discussed a variety of topics looking at prose and poetry as the mediums for the messages, let’s take a look at the confluence of these genres. Consider one of these questions as a way of exploring this idea, using your textbook. This means you should be both breaking down passages and explicating poetry—considering purpose and defining use of form. You must use at least three outside sources (but no more than 4, and two MUST be printed material) to help corroborate your premises, and consider at least two genres in the course of your paper. Be sure to write a works cited page. Do not use a topic, poem or short prose piece you have already written on or that we have discussed in class. You must write on two different genres and you must use the language of literary analysis, including supporting passages from your secondary sources ACTIVELY in your essays.

Pick a Topic:

1. Taking into consideration the ethos and pathos of argument, consider non-fictional accounts regarding injustice and poetic renditions of such accounts. How does the author and poet use pathos and ethos? Reflect on genre by citing examples from the texts that define these categories of literature.
2. Taking into consideration Southern authors, consider the elements of Southern Gothic in two works of different genres and write an essay with this focus and a thesis regarding the literary movement.
3. Consider narrators of both prose and poetry who take into consideration traits of human nature when powerlessness prevails. Write an essay that details literary voice in these instances, taking into consideration what the secondary sources say about this "voice."
4. Take into consideration 2 texts of different genres in which the dramatic monologue plays a role in instruction of some sort. Write an essay on the tone and structure of the instruction.
5. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Polonius claims that "if one is simply true to oneself, then it is not possible to be false to any man." Considering two texts from different genres, either support or debunk this idea using examples of characters and personas who exemplify this idea of "truth."
6. Find an example of poetic prose and of prosaic poetry, and write an essay taking into consideration why the author and poet chose to use the genres in the way they did. What kind of tone (displaying examples) did they depict? What is the purpose of the dual genre?
7. Consider works from two different genres that use a specific kind of philosophy or rhetoric as the defining element of the writing. Write an essay exploring the way the author uses the school of thought/rhetoric he/she has chosen.
8. Lyric poetry and music go hand-in-hand—American musical forms such as Jazz and Blues have had a profound effect on American literature. Choosing two works of two different genres, explore meter and musical form as presented by your chosen author/poet.

"Five of the writter we have in the las segment all discuss their personal interior lives in one form or another, two in prose (Rousseau, Douglass) and three in verse (Wordsworth, Tennyson, Whitman).
Write an essay in which you do the following:
Select one area all five have IN COMMON, and explore the reasons why this is so, and then isolae one trait which is UNIQUE TO EACH WRITER and explain precisely in what way each one is DIFFERENT.
Of course, all autobiographical works should be distinctive because each person is an individual, but do not waste your time telling stories or summarizing plots. Concentrate on ideas, techniques, aspects, approaches, etc.
Be sure to discuss all five writers as equally and as fairly as possible, since each element of you essay is worth roughly 10%.

He is the first american poet, his work is only about ordinary life, no difficult words, material nor history facts, etc.
He talks about nature, life, peopl, he is totally romantic.

1. Free verse: Poetry without rhyme or regular meter.
2. Normal diction: Few fancy words, almost no illusions.
3. Subject: The wonder of everyday life.
4. Song of myself: long authobiographycal poem in which "myself" is also "America Democritization of Literature".
5. "Out of the cradle, endlessly rocking"; about a boy becoming a man. This takes placeon Long Island.

Essay Instructions: Write a literary analysis essay that, in its thesis, identifies a theme of the text under analysis and otherwise abides by the method outlined in Paul Headrick's A method for writing essays about literature. There should be in-text citing and documentations of all sources.

5) that there is integrated quotations in appropriate ways;
6) that the essay is attentive to the "purpose of the audience for the literary analysis essay;
7) in a comparative literary analysis essay, its purpose, introductory paragraph, and structure are consistent with the guidelines Hearick provides for camparative esays.

The "self evaluation" should make frequent and precise reference, supported by in-text page citations, to priciples and guidelines appearing in the "Paul Headrick's A method for writing essays about literature".
