Title: Gilgamesh and Odysseus Different Heroic Ideals

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1600 Bibliography: 3 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Professor requires at least 3 printed sources, 2 of which must be "primary source". He refers to the "reading" section of my class text and says I can use them as the "primary source" or as an idea giver to larger primary source text which are "The Epic of Gilgamesh" and "Homer: The Iliad". The 3rd printed source should be of "secondary source" which he defines as "later books about your topic, sources, or documents."

The professor emphasizes the ability to analyze or interpret evidence in a persuasive way and stresses that he does not want to read a descriptive summary of something he can read in an encyclopedia.

He expects for the sources to be included throughout the essay, as well as at the end, by following the Parenthetic referencing from the APA guide. He says that citations are normally required for all direct quotes and specific information or paraphrases gleaned from outside sources.

He says if internet material is used, then the general name of the site, specific internet address, title and author of the info or article and date visited must be cited at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. (I thought this was standard for APA style, but the professor listed it so I am unsure if it is or not)

He does not list a minimum requirement for quotations, parenthetical citations, or footnotes.

Title: Explain how you believe Carr and Armstrong imagine modern day man as a passive agent in the construction of his self

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1773 Sources: 2 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Professor's Prompt:

Essay 4: Carr and Armstrong

In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?,” Nicholas Carr intimates that how we learn
affects our being; the rise of new media has produced changes not only in
how we read, but also how we think and how we understand our individual
self: “it’s a different kind of reading, and behind it lies a different
kind of thinking??"perhaps even a new sense of self.”

Like the ramifications of the evolution of technology, Karen Armstrong
describes how religion has evolved in tandem with man’s evolution. (“As
life became more settled, people had the leisure to develop a more
interior spirituality.”) In earlier times, unlike today, “[r]eligion was
not something tacked on to the human condition, an optional extra imposed
on people by unscrupulous priests.” No. “Religion was a matter of doing
rather than thinking.”

Utilizing the ideas present in these two essays, explain how you believe Carr and
Armstrong imagine modern day man as a passive agent in the construction of
his “self.”

Requirements: 5 full pages, double-spaced (single-space the header only),
12pt Times New Roman font

PERSONAL INSTRUCTIONS:

I was told to speak of how the mind develops different ways of seeing (not the brain, but the "mind's eye"). The mind's eye, how "sight" develops internally, and how perception changes. The two texts needed to write this paper must be the following:

1) Carr, Nicholas. "Is Google Making Us Stupid" The New Humanities Reader. By Richard E. Miller and Kurt Spellmeyer. 4th ed. Boston: Wadsworth Pub., 2011. 67-74. Print.

2) Armstrong, Karen. "Homo religiosus" The New Humanities Reader. By Richard E. Miller and Kurt Spellmeyer. 4th ed. Boston: Wadsworth Pub., 2011. 22-38. Print.

The book ("The New Humanities Reader" By Richard E. Miller and Kurt Spellmeyer, 4th edition) has both texts needed to complete the paper, even though both texts can be accessed from another source. This writing class requires me to state my idea/answer the question, but also give evidence and back up any idea i give through quotes from these sources and to analyze these quotes and relate them back to my idea. I am also required about one or two quotes for each paragraph

In the instructions stated by my professor "Explain how you believe Carr and Armstrong imagine modern day man as a passive agent in the construction of his “self". The professor explained what she means by "passive agent", she said an "active agent" is someone who controls their thoughts and ideas and makes an effort to develop their own self and a "passive agent" is someone who does not have direct control while trying to develop a sense of the "self" because of interference from other things such as technology (Carr says it controls the way people learn) or religion (Armstrong says religion in the old days was a matter of just doing, not thinking). I believe if the sources stated above were read then there would be a more complete understanding of the question and how to go about it.

Please if you have ANY questions about the paper, concerns on the topic or issues accessing the source, do not hesitate to email me, I am even willing to talk on the phone, just request my mobile number through email (no out of U.S. calls please). I am a desperate student at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Thank you so much for your service.

There are faxes for this order.
