A vast array of original data resources are available at the NACJD site maintained by the ICPSR at the University of Michigan. The data collections are extensively documented -- by examining file descriptions you can learn quite a lot about how data were collected.
Thousands of data files are available in two general categories. First, and of most general interest, are data series and one-time studies collected by or for government agencies. The Justice Research and Statistics Association (JRSA) is an organization that supports state statistical analysis centers (SACs). Go to the SAC directory on the JRSA web site. Because crime prevention depends extensively on problem analysis, many tools for planning and evaluation are available from government sites. Find a graph of interest to you. After viewing it, download the spreadsheet used to produce the graph. Use a spreadsheet program to alternately compute column and row percentages for sample tables. Then write out statements interpreting the percentages.
