Title: Richard E Neustadt

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1765 Bibliography: 1 Citation Style: None Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: This is an essay based soley on notes and from the book "Presidential Power and the modern persident" by Richard E. Neustadt. This is the only source. I will be providing essay instructions below. It will as provided by the instructor. Aside from the material in the book please incorporate the following notes and my opinions. "I believe the founding fathers were vague in being specific on how much power to give the president" I believe it was intended to adapt for the times. Briefly touch on Article I, II, III relating to the powers of the President. Roosevelt being the 1st president to be active followed by Truman and then Eishenhower going back to more of a traditional role. Congress being used to Truman and Roosevelt for 20 years started getting frustrated that Eishenhower wasn't proposing a legislative agenda, budget...etc. Eisenhower says.. its not his job to do so but finally gives in.
Touch on the Traditionalists scholars, Behaviorlists scolars -->Neustadt. After traditional roles the outcome is Immpeachments setting bad precedents. Andrew johonson shouldn't gotten impeached, Nixon resigned..should've still gotten convicted..Clinton rediculous impeachment and finally Reagan commiting high crimes upon signing a decree if he had invaded nicaraqua to subdue the uprising in the states, he would dismiss congress, suspend habeas corpus, suspending the constitution when he under oather promissed to defend and protect the constitution. And of course the George bush abusing the power relating to the patriot act following 911. How he decieved the american people instead of educating. All these examples set bad precedence as to when to impeach a president. these are some of the ideas to include as they relate to the notes from lectures. feel free to leave out what is unecessary for the essay. Now here are the instructions for the ESSAY QUESTION.

QUESTION

Neustadt see presidentialpower” largely within the context of Dahl’s “ability to persuade” argument. He also sees this “power” as the being dynamic and the cautions, to maximize power and thereby the chances of success on any given issue, the president must guard his power prospects through the choices he makes. What considerations leads Neustadt to this position? What are the advantages and the disadvantages of a president conducting himself in his manner? At the minimum, your response should explore these advantages and disadvantages within the context of a president being generally “successful” (however you choose to define the concept) and how beneficial such and approach is for the nation in general. Given your considerations, to what extent is a president well advised to conduct his presidency in accordance with the Neustadt’s recommendation? Justify your position.
