"Money" in a P.O.W. Camp



"The Economic Organisation of a P.O.W. Camp," written by R.A. Radford was first published in 1945 (the last year of World War II) in the prominent economics journal, Economica. R.A. Radford spent almost two years in a P.O.W. camp and describes how an economic structure evolved in the camp. It is a very interesting article.

Ratford uses British expressions that were in common use after World War II. Some of these are still in use in Britain. Bully is canned beef. Treacle is molasses. Oflags, short for Offizierslagers, are POW camps for officers. The BRCS is the British Red Cross Society. Money is clipped when metal is trimmed from the edges of coins. It is sweated when heat is applied to remove the metal. Points are electrical contacts.

This is an excerpt of chapter 1 of Salisbury’s book in which he tells the story of the removal of Algonquin-speaking Indians of southern New England that culminated in the permanent settlement of the British, namely the Puritans. This is the academic version of the story of the U.S. origin story of the Pilgrims that includes an in-depth view of the native peoples of the area.

Southern New England includes Massachussets, Connecticut and Rhode Island where groups such as the Pokanoket and Narragansett indians lived. Salisbury focuses on the Indians from this area, you’ll notice that on occasion he contrasts the northern Indians with them. The chapter focuses only on the Algonquin Indians and their practices, social structures and values before Europeans arrived. We’re going to focus on their values and ideology because of the sharp contrast with the Puritans who would arrive in the early 17th century, who we’ll discuss later in the week.
