Essay Instructions: Politicians Profile and Position

The last paper for this course will be a prediction and comparison of the likely vote of two real members
of the House of Representatives on a new law.
1. You will choose two real members of the House of Representatives, one Republican and one
Democrat. (There are 435 members of the House, you should be able to find someone that interests
you.)

2. You will pick a real piece of legislation or a fictitious federal law. You can search the real bills on

I have listed ideas for fictitious bills in this document.
3. You will research your legislators? real backgrounds and predict what you believe will be your
legislators? positions on the selected issue.
You need to learn real indicators of your real legislators? position. Research the legislators? biographies.
What is there about her history and attributes that might help predict her vote on this law? You should
learn the demographics of your legislators? constituency and the election status of your legislator. Is she
a freshman, or a veteran? Is her re-election sure or ?iffy?? Who lives in her district? Is it rich or poor? Is
it dominated by a city or industry? (These may or may not influence your member?s vote, but be sure to
look at them.) You should describe your legislators? position in Congress (which party, seniority,
leadership positions, committee assignments). Who has given money to your legislators? election
campaigns? What is the position of your legislators? political party on this issue? Do your legislators?
supporters support or oppose this issue? Have any special interest groups given your legislator a report
card on a relevant topic? Will your legislators? vote on this issue affect his or her chances at reelection?
How has your legislator voted on prior bills that are similar You will attempt to describe your legislators?
position on the chosen issue based on the background you researched. I want to see your logical
connections between the facts about your legislator and your prediction.
This paper will probably be around five typewritten pages long, and the grade will include points for
following MLA format. There is a grading rubric for this paper on Blackboard.
