Essay Instructions: Poetry Analysis Essay "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost

Write a 2 page essay in which a brief review of the literal meaning of the poem, and explore the figurative meaning (theme) through an analysis of key poetic device / devices. For example, tone, mod, imagery, ryme, scheme, symbolism,or personification.

Essay Instructions: You are to write on 2 of the poets and discuss at least 2 poems by each poet.
Your initial posting must be in the form of an essay following MLA guidelines. In order to do a thorough job, you must write between 700-1000 words. Please write on one African poet and one of the African American poets (discuss two poems by each of these poets. Please compare and contrast the African and the African American poets. I will upload the poets and the poetry analysis sheet in a few minutes.

Essay Instructions: This needs to be an analysis using formalist method of interpretation withan underlined thesis.Below is a suggested outline for the paper.
Suggested Outline for Poetry Analysis:

I. Intro-Hook
Smooth transition to situation and setting; give the title of the poem you’ve chosen.
Smooth TR to Thesis: (complete sentence that states the theme or predominant effect
of the poem, as you interpret it). This should be an explicit thesis (discussing your
chosen topics in the order you plan to present them in your paper).
II. Briefly summarize the major events or aspects of the poem. You should state the
subject of the poem and then briefly paraphrase the feelings or thoughts of the speaker
about the subject. Quotes are sometimes useful in the summary (be sure to give the
line numbers in parentheses after the quote).

III. & IV. Choose at least two of the elements of poetry listed below that are most
relevant to the poem. In my opinion, the most useful to analyze are speaker, tone and
language. Keep in mind that when analyzing language, you will not find examples of each
type of figurative language, but you should find some examples in most poems.
V. Conclusion: clarify how the various elements come together to convey the theme or
effect of the poem. Include personal appeal.
