Title: aristotelian

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1383 References: 3 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: We have discussed rhetoric (from an Aristotelian point of view) as a “situational” activity. That is, rhetoric is an activity people take up to modify some situation by communicating with some specific audience in an attempt to get that audience to act in a certain way.

Lloyd Bitzer wrote an important article in which he asserted that rhetorical situations are made up of an exigence or need that can be effected by rhetoric, a rhetor who seeks to modify the exigence, an audience that the rhetor tries to impact with rhetoric, and constraints which are situational factors that both allow rhetoric to occur and limit what the rhetor may say or do in responding to the rhetorical situation.

For this assignment, you are to take a classical approach to a piece of rhetoric. The piece of rhetoric may be of your own choosing. Pick something you are interested in for this assignment, perhaps a favorite pop culture artifact such as, a film (e.g. “Citizen Kane”), a record album (e.g. Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”), a television show (e.g. “South Park,” “Punked”). Pick something you really want to examine as a piece of rhetoric.

You are to analyze this piece of rhetoric using ideas from Bitzer’s rhetorical situation. You will need to identify the need that the rhetor is trying to modify. You will need to identify the target audience of the message and explain whether or not the rhetor appeals appropriately to this audience. In order to discuss the rhetorical appeal of the work, you will need to draw on Aristotelian concepts such as ethos, pathos, and logos. Does the message appeal to the audience’s emotions? How? Does it appeal to reason or the communicator’s credibility? How? Be specific. Support your claims with evidence from the text you are analyzing.

You should also note the type of situation the communicator is addressing. How does the situation and the particular constraints it places on the communicator impact the message that is generated? Note that constraints don’t simply mean that you shouldn’t scream obscenities at a funeral (or church or synagogue). On the contrary, if you produce a rap album, you may be constrained to use harsh enough language to fit in with other artists’ work. Rhetorical settings go beyond the “epideictic, forensic, and deliberative” settings of the classical era. In order to examine these constraints, you will need to draw on sources that describe the situation itself (news reports, critical reviews of the work, the rhetor’s own statements, testimonies by audience members, anything that offers information about the situation).

You are to follow MLA guidelines throughout this paper. Each failure to employ MLA guidelines will cost you a point off your paper grade. You should have a minimum of 3 cited sources and a minimum of 4-5 pages of text in your completed paper. At least two of your cited sources should be about the situation the rhetoric was designed to meet. Papers will also be graded on quality of writing, quality of analysis, and demonstrated understanding of concepts. Papers will lose one point for each error in spelling or grammar.
