Essay Instructions: Persuasive Speech

Topic: Choose a narrow, controversial issue important to you, relevant to your audience, and realistic for the timeframe. Be sure your topic has at least two sides or opinions. Avoid choosing "old" topics such as abortion, death penalty, euthanasia, and others unless you choose a new slant or focus.

Cite sources in the speech/establish credibility: You must cite each author/source at least once during the speech and then mention it again where necessary. Do not cite a source in the introduction as if the whole speech is "Brought to you by..."! And do not wait and give your list of sources after the speech or in the conclusion. Talk about your subject, and then cite the source when you mention something specific you have borrowed from the source. Establish your credibility by giving the credentials of your sources and information. When you cite your source, mention the author, which is the first thing you usually write on the Works Cited list. If there is no author, mention the title of the work. You'll want to name the publication and give the date, if necessary, to establish credibility. Refer to the sample outline. You may read the quote or bit of information to the audience; they don't expect you to memorize quotes/paraphrases or names of sources and their credentials.

Research: You must cite a minimum of 4 authoritative sources. You need to use a variety of books, magazines, newspapers, websites, interviews, and pamphlets.

Choose a framework: Give the opposition's point of view by doing one of these: 1) find common ground and say you understand your opposition's arguments, that everyone is concerned about the issue; 2) present the opposition's view and tear it down as you build your case. Avoid ending the body of the speech with the opposing view because the audience may be confused about what you want them to believe.
