Title: Mont Sainte Victoire

Essay Instructions: Example essay: Critical Response on Paul Cezanne's Mont Sainte Victoire. MLA Format-example format on http://nutsandbolts.washcoll.edu/mla.html
1 1/2 page critical response. 1 Work Cited Page.

Resource: Martin, David F., and Lee A. Jacobus. The Humanities Through the Arts. 7th ed. New York: Lisa Moore, 2008. 26-27

First paragraph: Intro: artist, painting, title, and the date. This paper will explore the landscape painting from my participation in viewing "Mont St. Victiroie."
Describe the foreground of the painting: Could also add that it looks to be an impressionist painting focusing on linear lines, geometric triangular shapes, light, shadows, and single strokes to create an image. (Further research in defining an impressionist paintings can be found on page 88.)

Example first paragraph: "Paul Ceyanne's oil painting; "Mont St. Victoire" was designed in 1886-1887.
"This paper will explore his landscape painting from my participation in viewing "Mont St. Victoire."
The reader is introduced to the foreground critical response: "First, I will discuss the foreground of the painting."
Example: Linear lines framing the canvas are captured as trees with dark and light shades of green forshadow in an enlightening gold. The linear lines of the tree on the left side of the canvas entice the eyes to follow upward to the hazy white-blue sky. From the sky, single, dark black lines capture with light and dark shades of green seemingly "branch off" to the center of the oil painting, guiding the eyes downward. As the lines narrow to the focal point of the painting, simular to the right side of the canvas, single strikingly dark green arc-like strokes sway the viewer to frame the painting in mind.
Explain in the first paragraph geometric shapes-defining what a triangle and linear line is and how they apply to leading the eye up the trees and to the focal point of the drawing being the mountain.
Note: The foreground has a golden triangle at the base of the tree. The apex of the triangle leads the eye to the dark green triangular bush in the foreground leading the eyes upward to the right tree branching out and over to the center of the painting where the mountain in the background is.
The paragraph should only be one paragraph explaining the foreground. The paragraph is to be functional for the reader to be able to participate in the visual experience of the art work starting at the ground with the geometric shapes, trees leading up to the sky, and branches leading down to the focal point of the drawing being the mountain.

The second paragraph should state something like this so the reader is introduced to the next area of focus on the painting. "Now I will discuss the middleground." The middle ground consists of a triangular shape also of the road way leading back to the focal point and the Roman Aquaduct that looks like a bridge that forms the triangular shape to lead the eye back to the mountain. Also something of interest to discuss would be the light, shadows, and color and how they are significant to adding form (thoughts and feelings) and content (meaning of the art)

The third paragraph should state something like this. "I will now discuss the background." In the background is the focal point of the drawing being the mountain.

The fourth paragraph: Sum up an analysis. Artist name and title in the conclusion. Critique: Good or bad piece of work.

Note: The picture to the right side of the page has no color, trees, and the community does not look "nesseled" or protected by the mountain. The colors look to give the painting life and focus to the meaning of the work of art.
Notice how the linear trees guide the eye upward and the branches lead the eye downward to the mountain. The geometric golden shade at the base of the left tree leads the eye to the bush by the right tree. The point of the triangles leads the eye again back up the tree. The branches then guide the eye to the mountain in the background. Note that we participate in making the arc like green strokes as leaves. Impresssionalism had much to do with vibrant colors, light, and single strokes. The black lines of the branches are all single strokes also. We piece the lines together to form the branch, the tree, etc....
