Essay Instructions: Dear Mr and Ms,
Here are my professor's requirement of an essay. He gave me four topics, and I chose the second topic below.

Essay Assignment #2
Choose one of the following topics on which to write a thoughtful personal essay which meets the requirements stated in the syllabus. The rubric you attach to the back of your paper will be used to grade your essay, so definitely examine it carefully and write your essay to meet its requirements. If you wish to significantly alter one of these topics, or to come up with one of your own, please clear your idea with me first. Remember that the questions in each topic are guidelines: you should determine your own purpose.

For all of these topics, remember that the primary way we critique writing is to compare it to our own experience to determine its veracity. Remember the three basic steps of critical thinking: 1) Compare the concept to your experience. 2) Determine whether or not what the text says is true according to your experience. 3) Provide alternatives.

This is the second topic that I chose (2. Consider the essays we read which concerned gender and gender relations. Examine how society treats people of different genders. Are women still smothered by the heavy foot of patriarchy, or have they liberated themselves completely? Are men as free and socially liberated as women? In what ways are either gender judged or kept down by society as a whole?)

Remember to use the CPAVE ( Context, Purpose, Audience, Voice, Evidence) writing tool when planning your essay. Your essay should have personal evidence as well as at least three sources from the Norton: two essays from the most recent group of readings and one from the first group. I recommend at least two quotations from each source. To write an excellent paper you should also intelligently relate your own analysis, additional relevant quotations, and evidence from any additional texts we have read.
