For this assignment, you will write a paper that draws on Foucault’s essay to discuss a newspaper article from before 1900. How can “Panopticism” help us better understand the context from which the article emerged? How do panoptic mechanisms make the article possible? Where are these mechanisms most obvious in the article? Where are they “hidden”? Cite from both sources, and include a copy of the newspaper article with your draft and paper.

Include a note of at least 150 words at the end of your paper that describes how you were engaged in panopticism in the writing of the paper.

Essay Instructions: Objective:
To summarize a complex argument effectively and to reflect on the relationship between an essay's content and style.

Task:
Foucault's argument in "Panopticism" has moments which are easier to follow, and other moments which are hard to read and very difficult to paraphase. This assignment asks you to do two things: 1)attempt a coherent summary of Foucault's essay(i.e. formulate and explain what you believe to be the essential elements of Foucault's argument) 2)discuss why Foucault's essay is difficult to summarize.

Suggestion for writing:
Look at the essay as a problem to solve. You are free to acknowledge that you don't understand certain sections. However, you must make an intelligent attempt to identify and explain those elements that make Foucault's essay difficult. You can write about what you think Foucault might be saying-you can, that is, be cautious and tentative; you can admit that the text is what it is, hard to read. You don't have to master this text. You do, however, need to determine what you can make of it.

Brainstorming questions:
-Who does Foucault claim is doing what to whom?
-How does Foucault think about the individual in relation to the social order?
-What are the essay's key arguments, its examples, its conclusions?
-What makes Foucault's essay difficult? His terminology? Transitions? Concepts? Development of ideas? Use of detail? Sentence structure? Other?
-Does the essay become difficult at an identifiable moment or moments?

Format:
Avoid using "I"; this essay is impersonal. Each analytical paragraph must contain at least one quotation. Avoid all generalizations.

Essay Instructions: After reading the book Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison by Michel Foucault I am to focus on the chapter entitled Panopticism which is under the section about Desipline and write a two part essay about it. The first three pages will be dedicated to explaining to future readers what exactly is Panopticism, what he is talking about, what is his point, what does he argue, his ideas, how he is saying it, and what are the most important parts to take away from it. I am uses some of his quotes as well.

The second half of the essay should be entitled (Panopticism in real life) or something like that and try to apply it to something in real life like private schools and private universities. However, I have issue with this section of the book and want to explain why in the second part of the essay. Foucault claims we are over regulated but his message is not clearly defined. In fact I find his view of discipline is too broad and too generalized. His book and this section are needlessly complicated. By using big words and writing in an uncommon manner he limits his audience to a point that only a small amount of people can possibly understand it. His words are so boring that he loses even more readers. He sounds almost arrogant at times when he finds commonalties to back his arguments. His example like the village affected by plague is one sided and does not incorporate the whole situation. He does not take into consideration of complacency in his theory nor does acknowledge that there is a difference between discipline and mindless conformity. He thinks his idea of people policing themselves can be applied everywhere without taking into consideration the different cultures that exist. I believe his arguments are fundamentally flawed and too simplistic at times (black and white). He also does not see the difference of looking good and actually being good. (It is a lot easier to look good). I swear he is preaching mindless conformity which is eerily reminiscent of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany where people were controlled by fear and could not even trust their own neighbor in fear of being reported to the party.

So to recap the first three pages cover his arguments and gives descriptions. The last three pages are about applying it in real life and attacking his arguments.
