Marquis & Huston, (2017) states that ethics is the methodical study of what a person?s conduct and actions should be about self, other human beings, and the environment. Ethics is a system of moral conduct and principles that guard a person?s actions in regards to what is right and wrong to oneself and the society at large (Marquis & Huston, 2017). .Assessment is crucial to the growth of an individual, both personally and professionally. It allows one to see themselves as others do. As such, they can more clearly observe their faults and learn how to address them. Self-assessment is especially vital for people in leadership positions. Management implies less oversight but more responsibility and power than at lower levels (Martin, 2014). Due to this, it may be much easier for people to be tempted to engage in unethical behavior.
Various models predict such likelihood, including the agency theory. Under the agency framework, it is theorized that temptation is made up of two distinct elements: incentive and opportunity (Cianci, Hannahm, Roberts & Tsakumis, 2014). leaders are best placed to stop unethical behavior among their subordinates. To do so, a manager requires ethical, moral, and legal leadership skills (Cianci et al., 2014). Ethical leadership is defined as offering guidance by emphasizing the respect for other people?s rights and the virtuousness of their motives. Legal leadership involves following rules and sets, an example for subordinates to do so as well.

Ethical Framework
An ethics framework gives a standardized approach to working through ethical issues and making decisions. Having an ethics framework helps promote ethical behavior and practices throughout the organization and clarifies ethical issues when they arise (Kaposy et al. 2016). Marquis & Huston, 2017 enumerates that frameworks do not solve the ethical problem but assist to clarify personal values and beliefs (Marquis & Huston, 2017). Huston & Muston mentioned four main types of ethical frameworks namely: Deontological ethical theory, Duty-based reasoning, Intuitionist framework and right-based reasoning (Marquis & Huston, 2017). The deontological theory is based on the philosophy of Emmanuel Kant in the 18th century. This approach judges whether the action is wrong or right regardless of the consequences and it uses for its basis of philosophy, the Duty-based reasoning, and rights-based reasoning. The duty-based reasoning is an ethical framework that states that some decisions must be made because there is a responsibility to do something or refrain from doing something. The Rights-based reasoning stipulates that some things are a person?s just due. Finally, intuitionist framework allows the decision maker to review each ethical problem on a case-by-case basis. The decision making is based on what the individual believes its right (Marquis & Huston, 2017).
Ethical dilemma encountered
An ethical dilemma experienced is about a 72 -year old Asian woman with metastatic breast cancer to bone, and lungs. She suffered severe pain; shortness of breath. Patient has a standing PRN order of Morphine 1 mg IV every two hours for pain( maximum 10 mg in 24 hours). Most of the nurses feared to give her this medication because Morphine is an effective, potent opioid analgesic, but with a potentially dangerous side effect of being a respiratory depressant (Thompson et al. 1998). The ethical dilemma is that the nurses hold and do not give this patient the pain management for fear of lowering her respiration further.
Implication to patient care
Rattani (2015) enumerates that pain is a common, devastating symptom of the disease affecting patients? lives sometimes more than cancer. Pain can occur at any stage of disease, metastases of the disease, bony involvement with tendency and closeness of the tumor to neural structures and generation of pain-producing substances by the tumor (Rattani, 2015). Also, health care professionals lack the education to manage pain and ethical considerations of pain management. They are fearful and anxious about the regulation of controlled substances with concerns about side effects of analgesics and patients becoming tolerant and addictive to these opioids. There is a need for improved training in cancer pain management at all levels of professional education is needed (Rattani, 2015). Elchos (2010) stipulates that nurse managers should aid nurses to reduce perceived ethical dilemmas and or moral distress. They should assist nurses in voicing their concerns in a non-threatening, non-judgmental environment by incorporating ethical discussions into daily multidisciplinary rounds. They should also provide healthcare members the opportunity to communicate ethical concerns and to solve problems by addressing those concerns (Elchos, 2010).
Nurse as a Moral agent
Transcultural caring and advocacy in the workplace are intended to call attention to specific learning content for nurses related to culture and linguistics to prepare them to serve the diverse patient populations they might encounter in practice (Martin, 2014). Nurses are present to serve as advocates for culturally and linguistically appropriate care. Nurses are compelled to be informed about policy beyond the borders of their own country considering increasing globalization (Martin, 2014). The American Nurses Association states that nursing encompasses the alleviation of suffering (Rattani, 2015). Pain dehumanizes and isolates the patient. It was noted that the disease destroys the body while pain kills the soul. So, it was stated that cancer patient should receive more pain medication if they request more pain medication according to national comprehensive cancer center practice guidelines (Rattani, 2015). Shannon (2016) stipulates that a significant role of nurses is to be an advocate for their patients. Nurses are the team members who are at the bedside of patients that monitor and assess the response of patients to treatments (Shannon, 2016). For nurses, the duty to advocate for patients has become intertwined with a historical shift in nurses? accountability to the physician. Also, to speak up about patient-care concerns or conflicts, the nurse needs to advocate for a different professional status (Shannon 2016). Nurse as a moral agent needs to be engaged in policy discussions and change efforts (Shannon 2016). Holt & Convey (2012) enumerates that to be successful as a moral agent; a nurse needs to consider his/her practice and seek feedback from colleagues to improve practice. Also, it is essential for chief nursing officers to show their recognition of the importance of ethical practice and support for nurses to have the courage to do the right thing (Holt & Convey, 2012).
Leadership style
The leadership style chosen according to the Keirsey Temperament Sorter is Guardian. The Guidance is the cornerstone of society; they have the temperament given to serve and preserve the social institutions. A guardian has a natural talent to manage goods and services and use these skills to keep things running smoothly in facets of their lives. They have a lot of fun with friends but are very serious about their duties and responsibilities. They also believe in law and order and worry about respect for authority and that a fundamental right and wrong could be lost. They are practical and down-to-earth and believe in the rules and cooperating with others. They are focused on making happy and facilitating harmonious relationships. In an ideal job, these people give themselves and work toward the good of the group (Keirsey sorter II).
This style of leadership style would facilitate the education of the nurses on the importance of giving the pain management to the patient at that time of need because the patient is in hospice care and her symptoms need to be managed for comfort and end of life.
Summary
Medical personnel should approach their patients as an individual and treat them as a whole body (physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological). They should be treated regardless of their age, gender, culture, religion and social background. Pain is subjective; Pain management is essential and should be included in the duty of care to the patient. It should be managed accordingly and given its due importance (Rattani, 2015). Lastly, it should be acknowledged that pain is a subjective experience and individual patients have different thresholds of pain. Patients should be treated individually instead of being compared to each other, and this should be done in a non-discriminatory manner (Rattani, 2015).

Essay Instructions: Jose was admitted to Crossover Group Home on September 26th, 2006. He is a 46 years old and suffers from schizoaffective disorder, cocaine dependence, opioid dependence, COPD, Asthma and diabetes.
During his first three months in the program, Jose was admitted to in-patient treatment at the Institute of Living (IOL) on five separate occasions for suicidal ideation. Jose also complained of an inability to sleep because of breathing problems. Jose struggled with his diet, sending other residents out to the corner store for fatty snacks, candy, donuts and soda.
Around February 2007, Jose began to complain about pain in his knee. By July, he was unable to move around without feeling a lot of pain. Jose would ask staff and peers to get things for him and stated that he was unable to get them on his own. By August, he expressed that he had pain on a daily basis. On August 1st, Jose went to the “Hospital for Special Care” where it was determined that he had severe degenerative arthritis and possible aseptic necrosis. During this time, Jose also became incontinent, having seven accidents for the month of August.
By September, Jose had continued being incontinent and complained of pain in his leg on a daily basis. He continued to struggle with activities of daily living and there was a decrease in his participation in rehab groups and activities.
