Essay Instructions: Texts:

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: Novel
The Shawshank Redemption by Frank Darabont: Visual Text

Essay Question:

How do the texts use characterisation and setting to elaborate on the need to maintain hope and dignity in order to achieve personal freedom in the face of injustice?

I have made up journals on each of the texts which are attached and may be helpful, as well as a journal that compares the two texts with emphasis on characterisation and setting. These should be used as a help for writing the essay, but I would expect that whoever is writing it would also do their own research.

The following must be considered:
? When considering setting, reference must be made to the time frame differences between the two texts (One Day is set over one day and Shawshank is set over almost 20 years) and its significance
? Sophisticated language must be used.
? Because one of the texts is a film, reference should be made to mise-en-scene when analysing/comparing/contrasting setting.
? Quotations must be included for both texts (Whilst no Bibliography is required, referencing to page numbers in the novel should be included in the body of text for the novel).

Essay should demonstrate:
? Knowledge and understanding of the authors? use of stylic features and language techniques to communicate ideas and influence the reader?s response.
? Detailed knowledge and understanding of ideas, values, and beliefs in texts.
? Knowledge and understanding of the ways in which creators and readders of the texts use a range of textual conventions to make meaning.
? Analysis of the similarities and differences in texts, using comparative exercises.
? Perceptive analysis of the ways in which language techniques are used to influence opinions and decisions in texts.
? In comparative exercises, a perceptive recognition of connections between texts, through responses that integrate discussion of texts and move easily between them.
? Detailed and appropriate use of evidence from texts to develop and support responses, with textual references incorporated fluently in discussion..
? Accuracy, clarity and fluency of expression.
? Appropriate form and register for audience and purpose.
