There is an old maxim, usually attributed to a traditional Native American prayer, that says, "Never criticize another until you have walked a mile in his moccasins." The idea is that when we understand the circumstances of another's life, we are less likely to criticize their actions.

Many believe that we cannot truly understand their life experiences unless we have similar experiences ourselves; hence, a White person will never be able to understand what it's like to Black in America.

Others believe that through art, others may come to understand the artists' experiences. Of course, to do so, we must be open to viewing the world through the eyes of the artist.
