Title: Usage of Distance Learning in Nursing Education

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1808 Bibliography: 10 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: Requirements:

Use the enclosed paper outline/notes as the basis for the paper
~1000 words in length
MLA style citation
Must include 5 sources from Proquest (proquest sources start at #8)
Proquest resources will be emailed
One resource area that is weak and could use something better if you can find it:
Why are there so few entry level online nursing programs?
Resource #5 implies that the programs would be too expensive
#6 says that washington state requires student to have LPN
is it regulatory, technology, accreditation issue, best practice???

Intro Paragraph:

1)There is a major shortage of nurses in the US
2)Distance Learning has been cited as a potential help in dealing with the shortage
3)There are a significant number of D.L. Programs available to R.N's that help to increase the number of BSN and advanced practice nurses
4)There are few programs available to LPN nurses and entry level nursing programs(non-nurses)

Thesis: While DL has been a significant asset in reducing the current nursing shortage, major obstacles still remain in using DL to train entry level nurses such as LPNs and Rns.

Point 1 – characterize the nature of the nursing shortage. Make a point of the high numbers of qualified nursing students that are unable to get into competitive programs or have to wait several years on waiting lists. Make the point that the degree to which nursing programs are impacted varies geographically: School programs in some areas are less impacted than others.

Point 2 – D.L. Has been useful in helping to train R.N.s to become BSN's and MSN's. Describe the general benefits that D.L. Has afforded nursing education.

Point 3 - Unfortunately, there are few D.L. Programs available to LPNs and none available for entry level students. Provide statistics on numbers of D.L. Programs available by category (e.g. RN-BSN, etc.). Describe the reasons why there is a lack of entry level programs.

Describe 2 distance learning programs that are examples of entry level nursing programs

Point 4a – Describe the Rio Salado online program. RN distance learning program. It has a limiation in that the hospitals in the clinical component network are all in Arizona. In theory this could expand to other states.

Point 4b – I found one LPN-BSN program that claims to be the only one of its kind(Indiana State Univ). Describe the program. In particular, describe how they handle the clinical portion of the program.

Point 5 – Describe what needs to happen in order to allow more LPN and entry level programs.

Conclusions – Include a standard summary conclusion.

1)https://fortress.wa.gov/doh/hpqa1/hps6/Nursing/documents/Nursing_Annual_Report.pdf – Lack of clinicals inhibits expansion
2)http://www.indstate.edu/nurs/lpn-bs.html – Indiana State's online LPN-BSN program
3)http://medi-smart.com/ - Directory of online nursing programs
4)http://www.mhc.org/mhc_images/edprogramsurvey06.pdf – statistics on percentages of qualified students not admitted
5)http://www.nmc.edu/healthoccupations/nursing/online-nursing-faq.html - FAQ #4 “At this time, this is not a feasible option because of Board of Nursing regulations about how instruction can be done for entry level students. These require that a qualified instructor be hired by the nursing program to provide direct instruction of students. Such instruction is too costly to do on a one to one basis. While in the future we hope we can come up with cooperative solutions between states and between nursing programs, we are not there yet. “ - This seems to indicate why entry level online courses are not available. - If you can find a stronger reference that this please use it(actual published article vs. university FAQ).
6)https://fortress.wa.gov/doh/hpqa1/hps6/Nursing/documents/Regents_Preceptor.pdf – This document describes requirements for students securing their nursing education from external degree programs. One requirement listed is an LPN license. This implies that regulatory issues exist for entry level DL nursing programs.
7)http://www.rio.maricopa.edu/nursing/prospectiveStudents.shtml – Online nursing degree for the non-nurse student. Clinicals are done through hospital partnerships. Drawback is that it looks like all schools are local to the college. The school says it wants to expand its network. Not sure if it could be expanded to other states.

Title: program development and improvement

Total Pages: 4 Words: 1126 Sources: 4 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: An important issue in nursing education, and one that has contributed to the nursing shortage, is the lack of qualified nursing faculty. Attracting, selecting, and retaining nursing faculty is an important job for all faculty members. As a faculty member of a new nursing program you have been given the job of developing a job description for new nursing faculty for the BSN program. The program needs faculty for all major nursing areas: medical/surgical, maternal/child, pediatrics, community health, and psych/mental health. You have also been asked to develop a guide for interviewing prospective candidates. Finally, you have been asked to develop a strategy for retaining nursing faculty in your program.

Task:

A. Develop a job description for nursing faculty (suggested length of 1 page). This may be a job description for any one of the specialties and may be for a position that is only theory, only clinical, or a combination of both theory and clinical. The job description should designate which type of position it is. Include the following in your description:
1. Position requirements (e.g., required education, experience, and scholastic endeavors and achievements)
2. Position responsibilities (e.g., expectations of job including amount and type of teaching/interaction with students, other program responsibilities).

B. Develop a candidate selection process for a nursing faculty position (suggested length of 1 page) in which you do the following:
1. Develop specific questions about education, degrees, nursing specialization, certifications, past clinical nursing experience, and scholastic endeavors and achievements.
2. Develop at least three open-ended questions that address the candidate’s philosophy and beliefs about nursing education, the role of nursing faculty, competency-based education, or other education styles.

C. Develop a faculty retention plan (suggested length of 1??"2 pages).
1. Support your plan by addressing issues that the current literature reports relating to nursing faculty turnover.

D. If you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.

Note: Please save word-processing documents as *.rtf (Rich Text Format) or *.pdf (Portable Document Format) files.

Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the attached Rubric Terms.

Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the General Instructions section.
