If this was me in this situation, I would explain what happened, truthfully. There are two main issues here. First is the actual ethical dilemma, and the second is the perceived ethical dilemma. The two issues should be addressed separately. The media at this point is conflating the two issues and that is a mischaracterization of what happened. When the media is creating a story, the key is to understand that they are creating a story and not feed into that fiction. Ethics isn't about optics; it is about what is right and what is wrong.
