Instructions for New Orleans College Essay Examples

Title: New Orleans

Total Pages: 16 Words: 4990 References: 10 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: My thesis is:New Orleans is a city still ill equipped to face future storms.

Katrina was a disaster from the government down to the geography of New Orleans(below sea level, etc.), to the levees aren't made for Category 3+ hurricane. If another major hurricane should hit New Orleans it would still be a disaster.

I had to hand in a bibliography mid-semester to show some works i'll be using. it's only three. You have to use these three and the next 7+ use at your discretion.

Title: Should New Orleans be deploying a WiFi hook up citywide or should this be left to the private sector

Total Pages: 5 Words: 1612 Bibliography: 5 Citation Style: APA Document Type: Essay

Essay Instructions: The case for this module involves a recent tragedy and a potential silver lining. The recent devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina to the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas needs no elaboration here; you all saw the pictures. What is interesting is a piece of the technological aftermath -- namely, the decision of the city to deploy a citywide WiFi system while a state of emergency still remains in effect, and the city is still essentially flat on its back. Here are two stories from the trade press describing the situation:

Frank Hayes. Big Easy Wi-Fi. COMPUTERWORLD DECEMBER 05, 2005 (This is a seminal source that is extremely relevant today) http://www.computerworld.com/governmenttopics/government/itgovernment/story/0,10801,106743,00.html?SKC=networking-106743

Marguerite Reardon. New Orleans to offer free Wi-Fi. ZDNet News: May 15, 2010

And here is a thread from Slashdot, the tabloid web site for the high-tech community, debating some aspects of this situation

New Orleans to Deploy Free Wi-Fi City Wide. Slashdot. http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/29/1833202&from=rss

The background information contains a large number of references to deployment of wireless technologies and to their availability in a wide variety of settings, both corporate and urban. You are strongly encouraged also to do further research using search tools in this area, since this is a breaking story, and by the time you get around to doing this module, odds are that the situation will have changed again; you don't want to look silly by presenting information that is now been rendered obsolete by breaking events. The underlying issues of course remain salient.

When you have reviewed these materials and done your own research (please be sure to use appropriate citations for any material that you collect on their own), please write a short (5-7 page) paper addressing the question:

Should New Orleans be deploying a WiFi hook-up citywide, or should this be left to the private sector?

In preparing your answer, you might want to consider the following questions:

if the city does not act, what are the chances the private sector will?

how complicated is it to deploy this technology?

who will pay the costs and who will obtain the benefits?

where is this technology going in the long run?

Title: Why New Orleans Should NOT Be Rebuilt

Total Pages: 10 Words: 3470 Sources: 7 Citation Style: MLA Document Type: Research Paper

Essay Instructions: Your research paper will be your effort to discuss one specific political issue which you believe is necessary for you and your generation to address today and in the years ahead. Your paper must explain the problem clearly and must explicate why it is such an important problem. The paper must articulate what you believe to be the consequences of failing to address this problem. To be clear, the orblem could range from why cities need to stop using water to clean their streetsto why the filibuster rule in the U.S. Senate could eventually bring about the demise of democracy to why religion is antithetical to democracy. (Topic Chosen: Why New Orleans should not keep being rebuilt)

You can be as controversial or as traditional as you wish in your analysis as long as your work is well researched, well organized, thoughtful, and - most important - well reasoned. The fact that people might question your these is irrelevant, as long as your presentation is compelling and well delivered.

The paper should have a thesis statement, an explanation of the problem, the reasons why it should be addressed, and the consequences of failing to do so. Paper must be written using proper research form, including footnotes and a bibliography. On-line sources are permitted, but no blogs or random opinion pieces from unrecognized sources will be accepted under any circumstance.
