Essay Instructions: This is to be a research paper that further expands on a literary analysis (See Below I have inserted it) I have already written on the novel Never Let Me Go. The research requested will expand on my original essay in order to provide more depth and detail by situating my interpretation of the novel by expanding it into a critical conversation about psychological tendencies as to why the character Ruth exhibits specific behaviors that reflect her psychological makeup. For instance, Ruth uses manipulation to constantly bully Kathy and Tommy throughout the story in order to persuade them into doing what Ruth wants. The sources should prove how manipulation helps Ruth achieve this goal and in addition it makes her assert power to help her forget she is only a clone. The persuasiveness of Manipulation
In the novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro used Ruth to demonstrate the effectiveness of deceit and lies, which were commonly, used tactics by the guardians at Hailsham. Through Ruth, it was seemingly effortless for the author to convey how manipulative behavior could undermine or sway an individual to conform to an idea or direction, weather it was or was not meant with ill intent. “I knew exactly what she’d meant by her answer and smile: she was claiming the pencil case was a gift from Miss Geraldine” (57). Ruth knew the outcome this endearment would have on Kathy because it was known that she yearned to be comforted by the guardians. With the same level of deception Ruth won over Tommy’s heart even though she knew Kathy viewed him as her true sole-mate. Instances such as these are why the reader quickly became unable to fathom Ruth’s persona because she intentionally hurt the two people in her life that truly cared about her the most. Ruth’s actions also helped the reader understand the humanistic side of her because what she truly desired was to deny being a clone and experience life as though she was a human being.

Ruth is a character that first appears dominant and extroverted. She seemed rude and self-centered, wondered who her parents were or whom she was cloned from, always wanted to impress the veterans and even got rid of the art collections from the other students to help her to fit in. In some way, Ruth felt she had to fool and trick those around her in order to achieve success, just as the guardians had. “Yes, in many ways we fooled you” (268). However, in reality the staff at Hailsham did this to shield their students from the pain of being a clone and only wanted to help them to live their lives in the most humane way possible.

Kathy realized early on in their relationship that there were two sides to Ruth. “There was one Ruth who was always trying to impress the veterans, who wouldn't hesitate to ignore me, Tommy, any of the others, if she thought we’d cramp her style” (129). It was apparent that as long as Ruth was dominating the relationship or trying to sway someone to believe her ideas were the best, she was friendly and loving. However, it was just as obvious that the nice Ruth could change without a moments notice if she felt things were slipping out of her control. It was for these reasons that Kathy and Tommy handled their relationship with Ruth using cautiousness ??" meaning it was always easier to play along or simply walk away than to be confrontational. This was especially true when the trio lived at the cottages and Ruth was so desperately trying to portray her relationship with Tommy just as the couples on TV did. This made Ruth feel like she was in a normal human; however, again she went too far in her attempts and only looked silly instead of impressing the other veteran couples.

In essence, Ruth’s personality traits were a way for the author, Ishiguro, to unravel and paint the portrait of a clone with a soul. Ishiguro elicits feelings for the character of Ruth, towards the end, by giving her complexity and depth through her “completion”. Hailsham was the first instance of humane treatment for clones before they were sent off for donations, and their destiny was eventual “completion”. Their sole purpose was to provide healthy organs for non-clones. The struggles clones faced and the souls they supposedly do not possess were portrayed through Ruth. However, Ruth was not the typical student from Hailsham. Throughout her short life, she boasted about one day going on a great adventure just as any natural human would. “If I ever learn to drive a car, I’d take us all on a trip to some wild place. Dartmoor, say. The three of us, maybe Laura and Hannah too” (201). Her objective was to be something other than a body to harvest organs from ??" she wanted to experience what it was like to be human at any cost. Ruth was one of those clones that did not want the life of a donor and succumb to the completion phase. Ruth’s character truly brought drama to the story and helped the reader understand the true feelings of the clones.

After Ruth began making donations, the reader witnessed the initial peeling back of Ruth’s mask to see the sad and empty person she had became after finally accepting her role as a donor. The opening donation became her first act of giving up. Shortly thereafter, she even told Kathy and Tommy to seek deferral because she knew of their attraction to each other. However, it is instrumental to understand that even in Ruth’s final days she felt she the need to have a hand in Kathy and Tommy’s future. While Ruth did manage to do this in a more mild mannered way at death, it still made the reader perceive that it only happened because she continued to inadvertently yield power over individuals. In addition, the reader was reminded that even in her most endearing moments; Ruth’s intent could be viewed as somewhat scandalous because of statements she had made throughout her life that were so cutting they could not be forgotten. For instance, when she said, “He really likes you, he thinks you’re really great. But I know he doesn’t see you like, you know, a proper girlfriend” (201) .

In the end, Ruth was correct in stating Tommy would never share the same relationship with Kathy as he did with her. The fact was the bond Kathy and Tommy developed went well beyond that of what he had with Ruth. They found that their intimate relationship was must less important than the stronger bond they formed, as a family. This also sums up the message that perhaps Ruth misinterpreted from her caretakers at Hailsham. The actual reason for their secrets, fooling and deceit was intended to shield the students and provide them with the comforts of a family in the most humanistic way they could without crossing the bounds of surrogacy. In life, we are all afforded opportunities and because Ruth continually made the wrong choices for selfish reasons; it is this that made the reader perceive her in a negative manner. Fact is, Ruth was loved, watched over and did experience what it was like to be human within a family unit, but she fought so hard not to accept any of it that she that it ruined her opportunity to treasure it, like Kathy did.
