Here are guidelines for writing abstracts of articles from professional journals:
In the psychology of adulthood and aging, important contributions are usually published first in scholarly journals. New theories, new evidence, and new interpretations of old material are all most likely to appear in articles addressed to fellow experts. Journal articles are directed to a small audience who speak a technical language. Authors may capitalize on this technical jargon, using it and other stylistic tricks to pack a maximum of information into the minimum space. Journal writers stress objectivity and do not include personal notes and colorful examples that enliven other forms of writing.
In writing an abstract or summary, the following questions serve as a guide:
1. What kind of article is it: a theoretical article, a report of an experiment, a correlational study, a research review, etc.?
2. What is the central aim of the article?
3. What was done to accomplish the aim? Examples: experiment, observation, systematic recording of observations, analysis of published research, commentary on a theory.
4. What objective evidence came out of the author's efforts? For example, what data are generated?
5. How did the author(s) interpret the evidence and/or relate it to the original problem or focus? This is where the authors present subjective views of the evidence rather than the objective findings.
Additional comments might include:
1. To what individuals or groups might the research be generalized?
2. How is the theory similar to or different from other theories?
3. What is the timeliness of the article?
