Mental disorders and crime; are police officers educated enough to distinguish between mental disorder and a criminal? If mentally ill people commits a crime should they be labeled as a criminal.



Why is it important?
This subject is important because when local law enforcement attends to calls many of them are not aware of the signs or symptoms. There are many examples such as schizo affected, bi polar, multiple personality disorders etc. Many of the illnesses can cause police to either think the person is intoxicated, mischievous, on drugs etc. In the end this can lead to issues as excessive use of force, or suicide by cop. If Police can become more educated on these areas, they would not need as much assistance by intervention crisis units. This can cause police to become held up waiting when they can be back in the street responding to calls.
